School Librarian - Part Time

The post-holder shall carry out those responsibilities assigned by the Head as detailed below.

1. Strategic

Give input to the Head in:

 Organising, developing and maintaining the Library from a strategic point of view;

 Creating a positive approach and instilling a culture of safeguarding in all School matters;

 Attend termly INSET, weekly staff meetings and twice weekly staff briefings.

2. Administration

 Co-operate with the Head of English and Deputy Head through liaising with other staff using the

Library;

 Liaise with staff delivering Learning Enrichment (SEND), English as an Additional Language (EAL)

and the Able, Gifted and Talented (AGT).

3. Main Librarian duties

 Organising, developing and maintaining the Library at all times both in day-to-day use but from a

strategic point of view;

 Cataloguing, shelving, book loans and returns procedures;

 Encouraging and stimulating pupils’ interest in reading not only through the way the Library is

organised but through competitions, activities and displays, especially during break and

lunchtimes;

 Helping English teachers with recommendations for class and individual reading;

 In conjunction with the Head of English, managing a programme of author, poet and book

events for all areas of the School;

 Managing Librarian helpers giving them suitable tasks and responsibilities as directed by the

Deputy Head;

 Promoting nationwide initiatives, for example World book Day;

 Keeping up to date with current reading trends and offering advice, encouragement and

recommendations to the whole school community via outlets such as social media;

 Working with all departments to provide books as required.

4. Responsibility for the Welfare and Pastoral Care

 Promote the School’s Safeguarding Policy throughout the Library;

 Liaise with the Head of Pastoral Care supporting pupils within the Library environment where

appropriate;

5. Relations with Parents

 Make arrangements for parents to be given regular information about the Library including

contributions to the fortnightly Newsletter;

 Replying quickly and efficiently to any parental emails/telephone calls/letters.

6. Finance, Resources, Site and Buildings

 Work with the Head of English to ensure the quality of resources is provided;

 Manage the Library Budget for book purchases, library resources and School events;

 Ensure the appropriate security/safety/state of repair of the Library.

7. Additional Expectations:

 Keep up to date with current educational thinking through books, journals and government

publications;

 Attend courses and to disseminate to colleagues where necessary;

 Take part in the Staff Professional Development (Appraisal) scheme.

 Accept and take on any issues raised through the external inspection of the School including

EYFS (ISI).
