Job overview

The Governors and Headteacher are seeking to appoint a School Nurse who will undertake the role of the primary medical practitioner on duty, providing a high standard of service within the NMC guidelines to pupils and members of staff.

Full-time,  30 hours per week, 41.6 weeks per year (term time, including holiday pay)  

Core responsibilities and tasks 

  • To lead on the medical response at Cransley for pupils from EYFS to Year 11 and colleagues and adhere to the NMC Code; 
  • To use evidence-based practice to develop and maintain a high quality of nursing care 
  • Liaise with external agencies such as school health advisors, children’s social care [where appropriate], Doctors and health centre staff, counselling support  
  • To lead work alongside existing pastoral staff promoting physical and mental health;

Nursing Role 

  • Act as primary point of contact for parents and guardians for pupils with specific medical needs 
  • Run nurse drop-in clinics at agreed times within the school day  
  • Ensure medical care plans and medical alerts are developed and written for pupils requiring them in liaison with pupils, parents and DSL  
  • Provide emergency first aid and emergency care and treatment as necessary  
  • Signpost pupils and staff to counselling and health advice services as appropriate  
  • Operate procedures for control of infectious diseases 
  • Follow procedures for the safe disposal of clinical waste  
  • Be aware of and maintain the recommended safe storage, usage and disposal of medical supplies and drugs  
  • Maintain treatment room stock, hygiene and tidiness 
  • Assess, implement and evaluate in-patient care of any pupils admitted to the Medical Centre  
  • Coordinate and oversee COVID operational guidance alongside the Headteacher and SMT 
  • Attend weekly meetings with the Designated Safeguarding Lead and safeguarding meetings as may be required 
  • Set up and organise medical forms and carry our new student medicals and routine weight/height check 
  • Coordinate routine vaccinations to be administered by the GP Practice or NHS vaccination service 
  • Be responsible for personal CPD in line with NMC guidelines

Health Education for pupils, staff and self 

  • To promote health education throughout the school population 
  • Take part, alongside teachers, in the delivery of RSE and PSHEE from EYFS to Year 11 as may be requested or basic first aid information to support teaching staff as appropriate 
  • To ensure the provision of and access to a range of publicity materials on issues relating to student health 
  • To attend appropriate ongoing training to fulfil revalidation requirements

Administrative 

  • Maintain pupil medical records accurately, confidentially and safely 
  • Keep nursing records to a high standard, ensuring the accurate and rapid retrieval of information 
  • Record dispensing of drugs following drug protocols 
  • Develop and maintain a suitable area for pupil medical support alongside the Operations Manager and Senior Business team 
  • Maintain general office procedures 
  • Keep up to date with current best practice, attending training seminars and other training as appropriate 
  • Provide evidence of CPD and on-going registration with the NMC  
  • Contribute to the development and monitoring of internal policies and protocols, with reference to external sources as appropriate 
  • Update staffroom boards detailing pupil medical information and First Aiders

Health and Safety 

  • Have an involvement and awareness of health and safety issues within school affecting staff, children or the environment.  
  • Keep accurate records of reported accidents  
  • Lead on first aid in school including ALS’ policy (and reviewing the policy within guidelines), process, training, first aid boxes, injury forms and communication to parents should an injury occur 
  • Lead on management of first aid kids and appropriate storage of medicine.  
  • Train staff in the use of adrenaline injectors and other specialist equipment or conditions.  
  • Attend Health and Safety meetings if requested to do so.

Pastoral Care, Mental Health & Safeguarding  

  • Liaise with DSLs to support child protection and safeguarding systems  
  • A key support, alongside the Emotional Literacy Support Assistant, to the in-school counselling service to pupils, working alongside the wider pastoral team and to contribute to the holistic pastoral provision of the school.  
  • Maintain a close working relationship with the Senior management and Senior business team.  
  • Contribute to staff training relating to wellbeing and mental health

Additional Duties 

  • Deliver staff training in regards to individual pupils medical needs  
  • Be available on short notice to support pupils who are unable to access the classroom for any reason

Personal Specification  

  • Degree or Masters in relevant area  
  • Qualified nurse or Specialist Community Public Health Nurse  
  • Excellent First Aid and Resuscitation skills 
  • Evidence of CPD 
  • Good knowledge of child safeguarding  
  • Up to date with health promotion ideas, nutritional advice and professional initiatives appropriate to the school environment  
  • Experience of A&E, School Nursing or Primary Health Care 
  • Mental health training and qualifications 
  • Ability to prioritise and manage situations under pressure 
  • Competent IT skills, including use of word processing, spreadsheets and databases   
  • Strong initiative skills and self-driven 
  • Excellent interpersonal & communication skills 
  • Positive and friendly manner 
  • Ability to interact with people at all levels, combining a confident assertiveness with a calm, courteous manner 
  • Professional attitude and approach to working at all times
