JOB DESCRIPTION – SCHOOL NURSE

The School Nurse works to provide a clinically effective, high quality service of nursing care to pupils and first aid care to all members of the school community.  This is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to make a meaningful and fulfilling contribution to the school community. They will be expected to work closely with parents, teaching staff, support staff and other healthcare providers to ensure seamless and continuous care is provided to the pupils.  The School Nurse plays a lead role in ensuring pupils with medical conditions, in terms of both physical and mental health, are properly supported in school so that they can play a full and active role in school life, remain healthy and achieve their academic potential.

The RCN Toolkit for School Nurses provides professional guidance in developing nursing practice in educational settings and should be used as a key reference.


Professional Responsibilities

  • Adhere to the NMC The Code: Standards of conduct, performance, and ethics for nurses and midwives and be conversant with the Scope of professional practice and other NMC advisory papers.
  • Use evidence-based practice to develop and maintain a high quality of nursing care to the pupils ensuring compliance with all relevant statutory regulations.
  • Recognise the guidance outlined in the DfE’s Supporting pupils at school with medical conditions (September 2014) and implement where appropriate for the school (non-statutory requirement).
  • Ensure a code of confidentiality is developed for use within a medical context and adhere to it.  

Nursing

  • Provide first aid and emergency care to all members of the school community as necessary.  In the event that a pupil needs to go to hospital and a carer cannot be contacted, accompany the pupil in the ambulance or take them there.
  • Care for pupils who are injured or who become ill during the school day.  Maintain contemporaneous records, notify carers and arrange for the pupil to go home if necessary.
  • Be available to parents and pupils at the start and end of the school day to discuss medications, conditions or incidents.
  • Ensure individual care plans and treatment protocols are developed and written for those pupils requiring them in consultation with the pupils themselves, parents, other medical providers, and teaching staff.  Provide training and support to relevant staff with regard to the care of pupils with identified medical or health needs. 
  • Ensure the smooth and efficient running of the Medical Rooms ensuring processes are in place that can be followed by any member of staff trained as a first aider.
  • Maintain medical stock, hygiene and tidiness.
  • Record dispensing of drugs following drugs protocols.
  • Maintain the School’s Accident Log for staff, contractors and visitors.
  • Develop medical protocols relevant to the needs of the pupils.
  • Follow procedures for the recommended safe storage, usage and disposal of medical supplies and drugs.
  • Dispose of clinical waste safely.
  • Operate procedures for the control of infectious diseases.
  • Arrange inoculation schedule in line with Local Authority guidance, where appropriate.

School’s First Aid Policy

  • Take lead responsibility for the School’s First Aid Policy and contribute to the H&S Policy and other policies where there is a health or medical input required.  Ensure that statutory requirements are up to date and best practice guidance is reflected in the relevant policies.
  • Arrange first aid training and defibrillator training for staff as required and maintain training log.  
  • Maintain stock in all school first aid kits and check regularly.
  • Check and test the defibrillator weekly.  Maintain defibrillator training currency.
  • Preparing first aid kits, medicines and care plans for pupils going on day trips, sports matches and residential trips.  Collate reports on return from trips and update medical records.    

Administration

  • Maintain medical records accurately, confidentially and safely using the School’s management system (Sims) as your primary source.
  • Provide information on specific medical conditions and allergies to staff and the catering team at the start of the school year and keep updated as circumstances change. 
  • Safeguard medical archive.

Health and Safety

  • Maintain awareness of health and safety issues within the school affecting staff, pupils, visitors or the environment particularly where there are concerns for health.
  • Ensure that the School is legally compliant with statutory requirements for medical provision.  Up-to-date logs and records must be maintained
  • Act as Health Adviser on the School’s H&S Committee. 
  • Provide statistics on a termly basis reporting minor injuries and accidents.
  • With the Facilities Manager, inspect the site to ensure safe practices are being adhered to; support and review Risk Assessments across the School; take a role in risk assessing large scale events for medical and health needs drawing upon best practice and HSE guidelines wherever possible
  • Review the register of COSHH held by the Facilities Manager on a termly basis and ensure that data sheets are held in the Medical Room detailing emergency medical treatment when necessary. 
  • Complete RIDDOR reporting as necessary. 

Health Education

  • Support the Catering Team in the promotion of healthy eating and positive relationships with food.
  • Support, and be an advocate of, the school’s approach to good mental health and wellbeing for the pupils and staff.
  • Support the delivery of PSHE as required.
  • Provide access to a range of materials promoting healthy lifestyles.
  • Keep up to date with current health promotion initiatives.

Other Tasks

  • Review pre-employment health questionnaires for new school staff providing advice and support where necessary.
  • Undertake any other task identified by the Headmistress or member of the SLT within the general scope of responsibility.
