Role

The Headmaster is looking to appoint a part-time School Nurse to join an expanding team; to provide effective, high-quality service of first aid care to pupils and to all members of the School community. The successful candidate will help to support pupils’ health and wellbeing in order for pupils to fully participate in active School life.

The School

The King’s School Gloucester has a rich academic tradition dating back to its founding in 1541. It houses the longest serving classroom in Europe and is held in high esteem amongst the local and wider community, winning Gloucestershire Independent School of the Year in 2020. The School strives for excellence in all areas: the academic results are strong with student value added being equivalent to half a grade at GCSE; there is a wide-ranging sport provision and pupils reach national levels every year; in Music, our links with Gloucester Cathedral provide an ideal location for high quality orchestral and choral music; finally, the creative arts enjoy much success with DT and Art having their own dedicated design spaces.  

Main Responsibilities 

• Ensuring the best possible medical care is available to both pupils and staff on an immediate and an emergency care on a daily basis 

• Treating pupils with the aim of encouraging them to return to their normal timetable as soon as appropriate 

• Where necessary, arranging to get the pupil home safely or to alternative care, e.g. the individual’s GP or to hospital 

• Administering medication according to School policy 

• Supervising and supporting pupils on regular medication and/or with chronic medical conditions 

• Performing necessary health checks to assist with diagnosis 

• Liaising with parents, staff and other health professionals in accordance with the School policies

• Liaising with the visiting School GP 

Responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Welfare Centre 

• Ensuring that the Welfare Centre is appropriately equipped and health promotion boards are regularly updated 

• Ensuring safe storage, usage and disposal of medical supplies and drugs 

• Providing first aid kits around the School and replacement of supplies as necessary 

• Providing asthma kits to the necessary staff/around the School 

• Timely maintenance of pupil files, medical records and welfare centre attendance records 

• Organising essential emergency medications in areas other than the Welfare Centre 

• Maintaining Welfare Centre stock, hygiene and tidiness 

• Ensuring all medicines in School, including asthma kits, are replaced when they expire 

Co-ordinating immunisation programmes 

• Liaising with the local NHS School aged immunisation team in the organisation of immunisation programmes 

• Arranging and managing communication with parents with regards to consent 

• Organising and supporting the delivery of flu immunisations for staff 

Providing support to academic staff and Well-being Mentor  

• The School Nurse will work closely with the Deputy Head Pastoral, Heads of Year and Well-being Mentor, but at all times exercise judgement regarding confidentiality whilst prioritising the safeguarding and welfare of children 

• One of the School Nurses to attend the weekly meetings with the Pastoral Team to discuss the ongoing support of pupils 

• Supporting pupils in the Welfare Centre who present with mental health/pastoral/emotional needs and communicating with the relevant staff 

• Attending any additional meetings with parents/health professionals when requested 

Teaching of pupils and/or staff 

• When requested, provision of medical updates for members of staff, particularly games staff, for pupils with specific health needs 

• Maintaining the correct level of first aid trained staff and organising external first aid training to ensure this 

• Informing staff of significant health issues of pupils as necessary and keeping ISAMS medical module up to date

• Organising appropriate professionals to provide training for staff as needed e.g.

Epipen training, diabetes training etc 

Involvement in Health and Safety issues 

• Working with staff to ensure the timely completion of accident reports

• Maintaining an Accident Report document to present to the Health and Safety Committee at each meeting 

• Implementing procedures for the control of infectious diseases if required

• Providing advice to staff, when requested, regarding specific illnesses and control of infection 

• Maintaining awareness and up-to-date knowledge of Safeguarding statutory regulations and guidelines (e.g. KCSIE) 

Administration 

• Ensuring information on medical questionnaires and relevant parental consents are entered on the ISAM’s medical model   

• Ensuring those staff authorised to administer medicines (with parental consent) have received appropriate training 

• Ensuring the School has a copy of any required action plans or care plans relating to specific needs of a pupil

• Maintaining electronic records of daily visits to the Welfare Centre or accidents treated and reported.  Updating as necessary to ensure accurate and rapid retrieval of information

• To undertake any other duties that may reasonably be requested appropriate to the job role 

 Personal Specification 

The successful candidate will ideally have the following: 

Necessary Qualifications and Experience 

• Nursing qualification or previous nursing experience 

• Experience of working with children and adults 

• Experience of providing pastoral support desirable

Desirable Personal Qualities 

• Friendly, approachable with a good sense of humour 

• Exhibit a calm manner 

• Excellent communication skills 

• Ability to relate well to pupils of differing ages and abilities 

• Able to manage their own time but also be able to work closely with others 

• Good IT skills 

• The ability to be flexible with working days 

• Good organisational skills 

Hours of Work

The post is term-time only plus five INSET days. Hours of work will be 8:30am to 4:30pm Monday and Friday. There may be other occasions when you are required to work and remuneration for these hours will be paid.

Holidays

Holiday entitlement will be 25 days per annum plus Bank holidays, rising to 30 days after 6 years’ service, pro-rata. All holiday must be taken within the published School holidays. 

Salary

Commensurate with qualifications and experience, this would be broadly equivalent to a top NHS Band 6 pay scale.
