OVERVIEW
School Nursing is a specialised practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success, and lifelong achievement of students. To that end, the school nurse must facilitate positive student responses to normal development, promote health and safety, intervene with actual and potential health problems, provide case management services, and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy and learning.
The Head of the BSB Medical Team is responsible for coordinating the daily running of all units, ensuring appropriate staffing, supplies, and equipment are available. Manage the orientation of new nurses; liaise between ministries and the team; involved in policy and organising of health education topics within the unit; and oversee accident reports and nurses' documentation. The Head of the BSB Medical Team is also responsible for organising whole school health screening procedures.
The duties outlined in this job description are in addition to those of any other roles held by the post holder. These may be modified by the Infant School Headteacher in consultation with the post holder and the other Deputy Heads to reflect or anticipate changes in the post.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Provision of direct health care to students and staff
- Provides care to students and staff who need emergency care due to injury or who present with an acute illness:
- Follows consistent procedure in
- deciding whether to call parents
- administering medication, as necessary, after checking students' medical files
- notifying class teacher (and senior management as needed) of intervention in specific cases
- Follows consistent procedure in
- Assists faculty and staff in monitoring chronic medical conditions
- Coordinates care and student emergency action plans related to diabetes, seizures, asthma, allergies and use of emergency medications i.e. Epi-Pen, Glucagon and Diastat
- Obtains parental consent for health services (up to date form on file for each student)
- Develops an Individual Health Plan (IHP) for children with chronic disease
2. Provides leadership for the provision of health services
- Assures those school policies and procedures adhere to legal and regulatory statutes and ethical standards of nursing practice
- Assist with the development of school emergency response plans for emergencies and disasters and the training of staff to respond appropriately within applicable state laws
3. Provides screening and referral for health conditions
- Addresses potential health problems that are barriers to learning or symptoms of underlying medical conditions by coordinating and assisting with mandated screenings.
4. Promotes a healthy school environment
- Provides staff educational in-service training such as CPR training and infection control updates
- Monitors immunisations and reports communicable diseases as required by law
- Reviews immunisation records for compliance with laws and school policies
- Assesses the physical environment of the school to improve health and safety, including the assessment of the playground, indoor air quality evaluation
- Reviews patterns of illness or injury to determine the source of concern
5. Promotes health
- Provides health education information directly to individual students, groups of students, or classes or by providing guidance and consultation about health education curriculum;
- Promotes health awareness activities such as fairs for staff and families; consultation with other school staff, i.e. food service personnel or physical education teachers, regarding healthy lifestyles and staff wellness programs
6. Serves as a liaison between school personnel, family, community and health care providers.
- Provides case management by communicating with the family through telephone calls, written communication as needed
- Serves as a representative of the school community and communicates with community health providers and community health agencies and partnerships to promote the health of the community

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduate of BS Nursing Degree with a minimum of 3 years relevant experience required.
- NHRA license is a must
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data base management
- Strong knowledge in Microsoft Excel
- Experience working in a Google environment preferred

Supporting the Head of Infants and Leadership Team in accounting for the efficiency and effectiveness of the school to all relevant stakeholders on a day to day basis
