About King Harold Business and Enterprise Academy

Andrew Jones - Head of School

King Harold Business and Enterprise Academy is a mixed, non-selective, non-denominational secondary school in Essex serving pupils from the age of 11-16. The secondary school, situated in Waltham Abbey has approximately 630 students on record. It is part of The Kemnal Academies Trust, along with 40 other primary and secondary academies.

Formerly known as King Harold School, King Harold Academy converted to academy status in 2010 and was identified as good by Ofsted in 2016.

The primary focus of King Harold Academy is the continual development of teaching. Pedagogy trumps everything. It is our belief that when teachers love teaching students love learning. To this end we have take innovative approaches to developing teaching practice which is rooted in, and informed by evidence of "What works". Our philosophy of teaching is underpinned by Professor Rob Coe's statement that "Learning happens when you think hard". Together, across subjects and experience we work tirelessly and collaboratively on our pedagogy.

Because of our insistence on teaching that challenges, our students are; studious, hard working, resilient and resourceful. They know how to learn and they realise the importance of "thinking hard". Visitors, including OFSTED comment on students abilities to struggle and overcome difficult tasks; "Teachers ask challenging questions of pupils and receive detailed explanations".  "Pupils are challenged to think for themselves and explain their learning in a range of activities"
