The Post and Specifications
Reports to: Head of Science / Senior Laboratory Technician
Hours of Duty: 36 hours per week. Timings are negotiable. An unpaid lunch
break of 35 minutes must be taken.
Term time contract: 37 weeks plus 5 Inset sessions and the annual open evening
for prospective students
Salary: BR5 - £21,715 - £23,032 FTE (Based on £21,715 x 32hrs x 38
wks \ 1675 = £15,764.44 pro rata per annum paid in 12 equal
instalments)
Holiday: To be taken outside school term times.
Conditions of service: According to the National Joint Council for Local Government Service as adopted by Bullers Wood Multi Academy Trust.
Responsibilities:
Preparation of materials
- Take responsibility for the collection and preparation of requisitions for all Biology and Medical Sciences practical work as detailed by teaching staff and organised by the Head of Biology
This includes:
- Delivery to and collection of apparatus from teaching room to relevant prep room for all Biology and Medical Sciences lessons.
- Purchase and collection of consumables which cannot be bought in advance for Biology and Medical Sciences lessons.
- Preparation of accurate solutions (as necessary).
- Trialing of experiments before they are undertaken by students (if necessary).
- Development of practical resources, in conjunction with the Head of Biology.
- Setting up experiments in teaching room.
- Cleaning (if necessary) and safe storage of apparatus after use.
- Advising and arranging of room changes and sharing of apparatus where equipment is in over demand or lesson requires a specific laboratory.
Maintenance
- Work with the other technicians to ensure labs are stocked with the correct equipment and stationery.
- Assess any damage to equipment / apparatus and report to the Senior Technician.
Health & Safety
- Report to the Senior Laboratory technician / Head of Biology with regard to Health and Safety as necessary.
- Assist Senior Technician in monitoring safety and security of Biology equipment and chemicals.
Classroom Support
- Participate in Science based educational visits if required.
Orders and Stock Control
- Advise the Head of Biology on the need for new purchases and replacements.
- Receive, check and store new Biology equipment in conjunction with Senior Laboratory Technician.
Presentation and Display
- Maintain appropriate displays in the teaching laboratories in liaison with the Head of Biology.
Other
- Relay phone messages to students and staff as necessary.
- Support the Biology Department / Senior Laboratory Technician with administration tasks.
- Cover for the Physics and Chemistry technicians as and when necessary.
- Work in conjunction with the Site Team in maintenance of the pond area.
- Maintenance and development of the greenhouse and plants.
- Any other duties that may be reasonably required.
