St. Nicholas School has two campuses and the Pinheiros campus is well established and centrally located in a cosmopolitan, attractive and busy part of São Paulo. The school is non selective and a vibrant, stimulating and happy multi-cultural environment for 680 pupils from all parts of the globe. International students make up 43% of the overall school population and International mindedness is valued, promoted and celebrated. The school provides a balanced, rich, challenging and transformative education for its diverse body of students aged from 18 months to 18 years of age, most of whom are studying in English as an additional language.
The Science Department is a successful, forward thinking and well-run department where teachers value sharing ideas, resources and experiences. There are seven appropriately qualified and experienced full time science teachers and two lab technicians who offer the IGCSE Coordinated Science course and Biology, Chemistry and Physics at SL and HL in the Diploma Programme. Results at IGCSE and Diploma are very good and at Diploma increasingly above world averages. Science is compulsory in all years from 7 to 12 and all students take at least one science at IB Diploma. Group sizes average seventeen in years 7-10 and smaller at Diploma. Curriculum development is ongoing to reflect the school’s inquiry based philosophy and the years 7 and 8 science programme is based around innovative school designed units of inquiry which reflect understanding and transfer of knowledge and skills in realistic and meaningful situations. This approach is now being extended to IGCSE classes. ICT provision in the department is very good with 6 purpose built labs each containing interactive boards, close to 1:1 laptop provision and data loggers. The department has led the school in its effective use of Google Classroom to organise resources and tasks.
