Seevic College is a successful college which prides itself on inspiring and motivating students to high achievement. We are currently looking for a Science Technician to join our busy Science team supporting the day to day running of A Level science, biology and other related courses. Experience of working as a technician in an industrial setting or in a school or college at level 3 is desirable.
You will be an enthusiastic individual willing to support both the Science team and students. A strong knowledge and passion for all aspects of the science curriculum including biology is essential. Experience with microbiology is desirable. Animal Science is included in the curriculum offer, and requires duties such as feeding and cleaning facilities for small animals.
You will need to be committed and organised to ensure all students are given the opportunity to further their potential.
JOB PURPOSE:
To work with teaching staff in all science areas, supporting students during practical lessons and project work providing practical assistance, in a safe and effective manner.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND MAIN DUTIES:
Ø Preparing required apparatus for practical lessons and demonstrations supplying equipment, dismantling and returning to store, in order to keep all equipment in perfect working order.
Ø The safe treatment and disposal of used materials including hazardous substances and responding to actual and potential hazards
Ø Give technical assistance in practical lessons when required, to always adhere to appropriate manufacturer usage and Health and safety requirements
Ø Clean and maintain areas and apparatus throughout the year carrying out routine maintenance and repair as and when necessary, to meet health and safety and college requirements
Ø Evaluate new practicals to find out potential problems and suggest improvements when necessary, to provide the best support to curriculum and staff
Ø Ability to facilitate microbiology and culturing bacteria experiments
Ø Maintain a computer database for department, requesting new stock when necessary and ensuring products are stored and labelled correctly and safely, for up to date reporting and information provision to management
Ø Ensure that Health and Safety checks and measures are adhered to at all times checking the safety of practical area during the day, ensuring equipment is safe for use, to meet college policy and legislative requirements
Ø To comply with the Health & Safety Policy of the College and other instructions given as necessary, rectifying or where appropriate, reporting safety hazards or unsafe working arrangements, to adhere to policy and legislative requirements
Ø To work flexibly as part of the faculty team in order to cover all aspects of team provision and assist curriculum delivery
Ø Setting up and caring for plant and animal collections within science
MAJOR TASKS AND PROBLEMS
Ø Ability to prioritise and juggle various tasks, whilst adhering to deadlines as required
Ø Consistently dealing with queries in a professional and calm manner
Ø Ability to understand and apply appropriate procedures relating to equipment, and Health & Safety
Ø Health and Safety is everyone’s responsibility and you will be required to adhere to all policy and legislative practice during every activity of work, as well as attending necessary training
Ø Keeping up to date with current procedures and practice though continued professional development
DECISION MAKING
Ø Appropriate person or area to deal with general maintenance queries.
Ø Ability to work on own initiative as well as take instruction when needed.
Ø When to pass a query to line management
Ø Writing and maintaining risk assessments for technician activities
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Ø Commit to other duties compatible with the post held, which may reasonably be required from time to time
