Duties and Responsibilities:
  • To act as a professional ambassador for the College at all times, in school and within the wider community.

  • To support the effective delivery of science practical work across the Senior School and Sixth Form.

  • To prepare, organise and maintain laboratory facilities, equipment and resources.

  • To provide technical support to science staff in accordance with departmental requirements.

  • To assist with practical lessons when required, working under the direction of the class teacher.

  • To support the preparation of documentation and resources for inspections and accreditation processes where appropriate.

  • To carry out duties as directed by the Head of Department or Line Manager.

Teaching and Learning:
  • To prepare materials, equipment and chemical solutions for practical lessons in line with health and safety guidance.

  • To support students during practical activities under the supervision of the class teacher.

  • To assist in maintaining a safe, organised and effective learning environment.

  • To support teachers in the delivery of practical work by ensuring resources are available and functional.

  • To contribute to the development and sharing of practical resources and risk assessments.

  • To attend relevant departmental meetings and training sessions as required.

Professional Responsibilities:
  • To maintain high standards of professionalism, organisation and reliability.

  • To ensure all communication is responded to promptly and appropriately.

  • To take responsibility for laboratory equipment and resources in your care.

  • To report damage, faults or safety concerns to the appropriate line manager.

  • To support school events and activities where relevant to the role.

  • To work within agreed working hours and school operational requirements.

  • To carry out reasonable professional duties as directed by senior staff.

Pastoral:
  • To maintain positive and respectful relationships with students, staff and colleagues.

  • To promote a safe, supportive and inclusive learning environment.

  • To be familiar with and comply fully with the College’s safeguarding, child protection and behaviour policies.

  • To report any safeguarding concerns in line with College procedures.

  • To support student wellbeing through professional conduct and appropriate boundaries at all times.

  • To follow all Health and Safety procedures to ensure the welfare of students and staff.

Person Specification:
  • Prepare chemical solutions, samples and equipment for laboratory use.

  • Set up, test and maintain laboratory apparatus and specialist equipment.

  • Support practical lessons in collaboration with class teachers when required.

  • Maintain accurate inventories of equipment and consumables.

  • Manage the ordering, receiving and storage of laboratory supplies.

  • Apply health, safety and environmental procedures consistently.

  • Assist with the cleaning, storage and safe disposal of materials following practical sessions.

  • Carry out routine maintenance and report major technical issues.

  • Support the operation and upkeep of specialised scientific equipment where appropriate.

  • Undertake basic administrative tasks related to laboratory management.

  • Participate in training to maintain professional competence.
