Job overview

Gateways School are looking to recruit a well-qualified science technician from April 2023 to join a highly regarded, established and extremely successful Science Department.

The successful candidate will be able to provide technical support, advice and practical assistance to our busy and growing Science Department in order to support the effective, consistent and safe teaching of science across biology, chemistry and physics disciplines.

Experience of working in a school environment is essential. The successful candidate will have COSHH and CLEAPSS training as appropriate. You will have a good knowledge and understanding of Health & Safety regulations. First Aid certification would be desirable, though training could be provided for the successful candidate.

You will have a thorough understanding of chemicals and their properties. You will be practical, numerate and well organised and demonstrate the ability to pay meticulous attention to detail. You will possess good communication skills and be able to work collaboratively within the department as well as on your own initiative, working well under pressure and to tight deadlines, prioritising tasks as necessary. Training in some areas may be available for the right candidate.

We have five well-equipped laboratories, and practical work is a key aspect of science teaching. The successful candidate will prepare for and lay out the laboratories with the equipment and materials requisitioned for practical exercises, taking responsibility for stocktaking and ordering as required; carry out risk assessments for practical and technical activities, run trials of experiments and help to run demonstrations. You will advise with regard to the safety, repair and general maintenance of all resources, tools, equipment and our laboratories in compliance with COSHH, CLEAPSS and other relevant legislation and school documentation.

A working knowledge of, or interest in, science is essential. You will work closely with teachers to provide a dynamic, engaging curriculum.

The Science Department offers AQA GCSE Science Trilogy and AQA GCSE Triple Science. Results are regularly in the top 5 schools nationally for value added (CEM Centre data) and a large percentage of pupils go on to study at least one science A Level.

Working Hours: The successful candidate will work 08:00 – 16:00, 4 or 5 days a week during term time, plus all staff training days. Additional days during the school holidays may be required.

Salary: From £19,000 depending on experience. Paid pro rata for part time working.

Closing Date: Monday 20th February at 8am

Interviews: w/c 20th February or 27th February
