We have an exciting opportunity for a part time Laboratory Technician to join our team at Loretto School based in Musselburgh. We are keen to offer this as a Modern Apprentice opportunity; however, we are flexible and are happy to accept applications from other candidates who may already have relevant qualifications or experience in this environment.

What is the role?

The post holder will provide technical support to the wider science department. Responsible for ensuring the efficient running of the laboratories, the successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining equipment and apparatus, preparing and disposing of materials and for ensuring that safe practices are followed at all times. As your skills develop, you will also take an active part in education delivery, though the demonstration of practical’s and ownership of the department’s science communications plan.  

Modern Apprentice - What will I learn?

As part of the Modern Apprentice Programme, you will complete the Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities (Education Science).  Assessment will be done in the workplace and will allow you to demonstrate the competencies to carry out the role. The qualification covers areas such as health and safety, working relationships, and evaluating and providing scientific or technical assistance for learning activities.

What qualifications are required

Ideally, the candidate will already be in possession of an HNC in a science related subject to be able to go straight to the workplace assessment stage. If you don’t have this, but have other demonstrable experience, we would also welcome an application. 

Whatever your background, you will need to be able to demonstrate a passion for science, as well as good communication and organisational skills.

Founded in 1827, Loretto School is one of the top UK boarding schools for boys and girls aged 0-18. Our staff are vital in us being able to provide those experiences and to provide the highest level of care and support throughout a pupil’s time with us. 

The post is part time, working 20 hours per week during term time only. The post holder will need to work Tuesday and Thursday, 1-5pm, however there is flexibility in how the remaining hours are scheduled.

The salary for the post is £7,680 per annum.
