Job Purpose: Working alongside the Head of Computing to lead the Department in achieving outstanding teaching and learning; to inspire, encourage and empower our pupils to achieve their very best in the growing subject of Computer Science.

We are seeking a talented and inspirational teacher and leader to join Surbiton High School from September 2018. The ideal candidate will be able to teach up to Key Stage 5 and be proficient in one or more of the programming languages suited to the AQA GCSE and A-Level specifications. Currently, our pupils are working with Visual Basic, Python and Java.  
 
Computer Science is studied as an optional subject at both GCSE and A-level. Our KS3 curriculum aims to achieve all strands of the National Curriculum for Computer Science, with a strong emphasis on both programming and collaborative ICT skills. We are currently expanding our cross-curricular links and increasing the profile of computing across the whole school community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Possess and maintain a deep and secure knowledge of your subject and the pedagogy associated with its teaching.
  • Manage the assessment of a Key Stage appropriate to the candidate’s expertise and interest (assessment materials, mark schemes and feedback grids and the provision of exam papers).
  • Ensure that department staff teaching in that Key Stage have access to the relevant subject-based skills and knowledge through departmental training opportunities.
  • Monitor the progress of all pupils within that Key Stage, including coordination of any post-test/exam implementation.
  • Be proactive in leading on intervention strategies for pupils in that Key Stage.
  • Coordinate new coding clubs and a computing society to enrich and develop non-curriculum content to enhance co-curricular offering.
  • Keep abreast of latest teaching methods to share with the department, develop the most able pupils and encourage Computing beyond A-Level.
  • Deputising for the Head of Department in their absence.
  • Carry out the appraisals as directed by the Head of Department

The successful candidate will be likely to fit the following profile:

  • Good Honours degree
  • A postgraduate teaching qualification including QTS, would be an advantage
  • Evidence of further relevant professional development
  • The ability to inspire, motivate and support pupils and colleagues in a successful and dynamic school
  • A proven track record of delivering on academic performance
  • Be proficient in at least one programming language for A-Level teaching
  • Evidence of successful, inspiring and innovative teaching at all levels
  • Up-to-date knowledge of successful and innovative teaching and the latest curriculum developments and initiatives
  • High levels of personal and professional integrity and an ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality
  • Personal warmth to gain the confidence of pupils, staff and parents
  • Ability to communicate concisely and sensitively, both orally and in writing, to a variety of audiences
  • Positive, enthusiastic and energetic approach to life
  • Committed to Surbiton High School’s ethos and strategic vision
