Job overview

Birchwood is a successful 11-18 mixed school with 1400 students on roll. We are very proud of our all-ability school, where students not only leave with strong academic qualifications but also as well–rounded individuals with a sense of responsibility.

We have:

• Engaged and motivated students

• 200 talented and hard-working staff

• Outstanding facilities for students and staff

• A determination to raise standards for all

• A belief in comprehensive values

• A commitment to professional development and staff well-being

We were inspected in June 2019 and judged to be ‘Good’ in all categories.  This reflects the journey of self-improvement we have been on collectively as a school with results across the school, including in Science, that exceed national expectations.  The Science Faculty is under new and dynamic leadership since September 2019 and you would join a team with a clear vision of how to improve student outcomes and an inclusive team where work-life balance is respected and the contribution of all teaching staff is recognised.  We have subject specialists in all sciences but we would ideally like to add another Chemist to the team.  However ultimately we want the right person for this position, regardless of subject specialism.

The second in charge role would be a key strategic role supporting the Head of Faculty and would provide excellent preparation for a middle leadership position in the near future.

We offer an effective and supportive induction and professional development package, available for all teachers as part of the school's commitment to a holistic learning community.

Please refer to the attached application pack for further information with regard to the role.

Closing Date – 21st October

Interviews – 24th October

If you wish to make an informal visit, we would be pleased to accommodate this.

We are an equal opportunities employer and are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of our students and expect all staff to share this commitment.  The post is subject to an enhanced DBS.

Birchwood is a successful 11-18 mixed  academy with 1435 students on roll. We are very proud of our school, where students not only leave with strong academic qualifications but also as well-rounded individuals with a sense of responsibility and a willingness to contribute to both the economy and society in general. At Birchwood, we are rightly proud of our 'comprehensive' ethos and inclusive philosophy where the academically gifted achieve top grades at A Level and GCSE, going on in record numbers to Russell Group Universities.  Conversely, those students who need more help are encouraged to progress in a caring and supportive learning environment. As a result, all our school leavers go on to further education or a chosen career with no one contributing to the governments 'not in education, employment or training’ (NEET) statistics.

Ofsted concurred when they inspected the school in June 2019 – the inspection report highlights our inclusive and balanced approach towards education, ensuring that children achieve well but are also supported and cared for effectively, as well as being given excellent opportunities in terms of enrichment, leadership development and extra-curricular activities.

As a school we pride ourselves on the high expectations we make of students and staff, prioritising excellence in both lesson preparation and delivery in the classroom. In all, Birchwood is a dynamic and supportive environment in which staff and students work with a clear sense of purpose, community and commitment.
