Job overview

Second in Department/Teacher of Geography

Permanent, Full-time

Start date: September 2024

Salary: Generous package dependent on qualifications and experience

We are seeking to appoint a well-qualified, experienced and enthusiastic Second in Department to join an innovative and energetic department. The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability both to sustain the high levels set for public exam results and to foster the lively life of the subject outside the classroom.

As the Second in Department, particular responsibilities will be identified at interview and in subsequent discussions with the current Head of Department. This provides an opportunity for an aspiring Head of Department to learn to develop pertinent skills in a very supportive, collegiate environment. Applicants should be able to teach across the age range up to the Sixth form; A Level or IB teaching will be available for the right candidate. The post is suitable for an experienced teacher with the skills to enrich a Department committed to academic excellence and intellectual endeavour. A proactive culture of supporting and developing talented and inspiring teachers is supported by the Senior Management Team.

We currently prepare students for the Edexcel GCSE Geography and Edexcel A Level Geography as well as the International Baccalaureate. Geography is a very popular option at GCSE, A Level and IB, and we regularly send a large number of students to study Geography and related disciplines at university; the ability to inspire, enthuse and support such students is a pre-requisite.

All staff at Whitgift are encouraged to contribute fully to the co-curricular life of the School and this is reflected in the salary offered. This will include attending geography fieldtrips within school holidays, as well as supporting or running both in and outside of department co-curricular activities. A strong commitment to the pastoral and house system is also anticipated.

We welcome applications from all parts of our community as we aspire to attract staff that matches the social and cultural diversity of our student intake.

For any queries, please telephone the Human Resources Department on 020 8688 9222 or email SchoolHR@whitgift.co.uk

Applications will be reviewed daily, and interviews may occur at any stage after applications are received so we invite interested candidates to apply as soon as possible.

Whitgift School (part of the John Whitgift Foundation) is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people. Applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening including checks with past employers, the Disclosure & Barring Service and social media checks (including personal, professional and other online activities).
