Second in Religious Education (TLR2 - UPS/MPS + Fringe) Full or part-time considered

St Mary's Catholic SchoolHertfordshire

Are you an enthusiastic and ambitious Teacher of RE, looking for a new challenge and to broaden your experience?

Could you contribute to the leadership of our dedicated and professional RE Department, comprising six specialist teachers?

We seek a Second in Religious Education to assist in the leadership of  our well established and successful 'Core' department. The successful candidate would be expected to teach across the full age and ability range, which will include A Level. Religious Education is a popular subject at the school with established courses at GCSE and A-Level.  As a Core Subject, students in Years 7-11 will study Religious Education for 10% of their curriculum time. All students at St Mary’s Catholic School study GCSE Religious Studies. The department also works closely with the pastoral team and music department to deliver a thriving programme of retreats and liturgies.

Religious Studies is also popular at A Level, with students frequently going on to choose to study degrees in or with a significant element of Religious Studies, such as Theology and Philosophy & Ethics. All Sixth Form students at St Mary’s Catholic School also study a Core Religious Education Course for one hour a week, this does not involve any homework, coursework or end of year exams.  Students will study modules including Catholic Social Teaching and Ethics, Science and Religion and Human Trafficking. The ideal candidate will be able to contribute to all examination courses, and Core Sixth Form general Religious Education.

Working at St. Mary’s is an extraordinary opportunity.  Our Surveys this year showed that 96% of staff enjoy their work at St Mary's, 97% agree that leaders do all they can to ensure a motivated and respected staff, 100% of students enjoy their learning and believe that behaviour around the school is good, and 97% of parents would recommend St. Mary’s to other parents.  We are passionately committed to developing staff and managing workload to ensure that colleagues enjoy their work and recognise St. Mary’s as an almost-uniquely positive place to teach and enjoy their careers. We offer a strong induction and training programme, including a personalised CPD package to support you in your leadership and teaching journey.

Added to this, the school is also at an extremely exciting juncture in its future.  Demand is high, and owing to intense oversubscription, we have expanded to 6FE (with an exceptional 7FE in Year 7 for September 2021).  We have also won over £7m in capital bids in the last 5 years and are enjoying brand new cutting edge facilities as a result.  The school faces an extremely strong and positive financial future.

Our previous OFSTED inspection judged us as Outstanding in every category, and our most recent S48 Inspection (2018) also judged us as Outstanding in every area.  Over the last 4 years, exam results have risen at both GCSE & A Level.  The ‘Progress 8’ score for 2018 was +0.61, which puts the school in the top 10% in the country and this trend was continued in 2019 with results significantly above average.  At A Level the proportion of A*-B Grades as well as students enrolling at elite Russell Group Universities has risen significantly over each of the last 4 years with 2018 breaking all school records. There are a group of students in our current Sixth Form with offers from Oxbridge.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.  A DBS disclosure is required for all successful applicants.  St Mary’s is committed to the equality of opportunity for all applicants, and we reserve the right to interview on a rolling basis, therefore an early application is advisable.
