Job overview

Second in charge of Science.

Tes is currently supporting a friendly and supportive secondary academy, based in Birmingham. The school is looking to add a Deputy Head of Science to its progressive and supportive Department ideally starting in January 2022.

The role will include coordinating and co-managing the delivery of Science at KS3, GCSE and A-level  across year groups 7 to 13. You will support the Head of Science to enhance provision and will get the chance to get involved with exciting project work throughout the year. Project work will include revising schemes of work and ensuring the curriculum is engaging to all learners alongside projects that support student attainment, well-being and engagement within the wider school. You’ll also lead by example, supporting learners to achieve to the best of their ability and you’ll enjoy that great feeling when your learners achieve grades beyond their dreams.

“At the Academy we are supporting all of our pupils to climb the mountain to university. We believe that success in a university preparatory curriculum is the best way to make sure that all of our pupils can make meaningful choices about their future when they leave us. As such, we teach an academically rigorous curriculum and provide pupils with both the pastoral support and the excellent teaching that they need in order to thrive. We prioritise a mastery of Science from the beginning of Key Stage Three, where teachers at the academy collaborate with colleagues across our network of schools in the development of a knowledge rich, trust-wide curriculum.  At Key Stage Four, all pupils study combined science, while also having the option to pursue separate sciences if they choose to do so. This success at Key Stage Four has led to science qualifications being our most oversubscribed courses in sixth form, where multiple classes of Biology, Chemistry and Physics run alongside a Level 3 Applied Science BTEC qualification. Pupils make outstanding progress in science at the academy. We recognise that excellent attainment in Science provides our pupils with access to competitive transformational destinations. As such, the continued success of our science department is central to our mission to prepare all of our pupils for success at university. The successful candidate will have oversight of the curriculum for whole key stages and/or courses and will lead the professional development and line-management of colleagues teaching in those areas. They will work closely with the Head of Science and senior leadership to promote excellence and enjoyment in the subject.  With support, the successful candidate will be able to gain NPQML or other nationally recognised qualification to support and enhance their impact.”

The school is offering:

• A super supportive and highly visible SLT team and Headteacher;

• on-going CPD with programmes of study such as NPQML and MA in Educational Leadership

• progression support throughout the school and wider group

• support package for NQT’s/RQT’s including CPD and NQT mentorship;

• the chance to take on further responsibility such as Leadership roles in the future.

• a relevant Science Degree or a related subject

• experience delivering Science up to A-level pushing and engaging learners to progress within the subject
