Job overview

A rare opportunity has arisen for a well-qualified, enthusiastic chemistry specialist to take a leadership role in our outstanding, high-achieving school. All students study biology, chemistry and physics as separate sciences at GCSE and chemistry is a very popular A-level choice at NGHS with over a third of the sixth form studying the course.

The faculty is experienced and welcoming with dedicated Technician support. The Head of Faculty leads on physics with another colleague holding a TLR responsibility for biology.

This post provides an excellent first step for someone contemplating a leadership post in our science faculty. The post would also suit a colleague who is already in charge of chemistry in their school; be that comprehensive or selective. Strong A-level teaching experience with outcomes in A*-B range is a key requirement of the role, however. The current postholder was appointed after 20+ years in another school and we value colleagues' experience, but we are also keen to hear from colleagues at an earlier stage in their career, who may be open to further promotion opportunities in the next few years.

Newport Girls' High School was rated OUTSTANDING in every category last term and students regularly attain results which top the local league tables. The school was also awarded the title of 2020 Secondary School of the West Midlands.

The post is available on a full or part-time basis (approx. 0.7-0.8). Candidates are asked to read the application information pack carefully and to detail their preference.

All staff are highly valued at NGHS. We have a dedicated staff well-being programme and great camaraderie and support between colleagues and friends in the staff room. We offer extensive CPD opportunities and associate leader positions. The successful post-holder will join the Humanities faculty, who are all very welcoming, experienced and friendly colleagues.

Please refer to the Candidate Information Pack below for more details and feel free to contact the Headteacher, Michael Scott, for more information and/or the opportunity to visit the school via jobs@nghs.org.uk

To apply, please download and complete the application form and return it to jobs@nghs.org.uk. Or use the online application route through TES.

Closing date - Monday 27 February 2023 at 9am (please note the school is closed from Thursday 16 February - Monday 27 February for half term).

NGHS is committed to the equality of opportunity for all staff and applications from individuals are encouraged regardless of age, disability, sex, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, pregnancy/maternity, race, religion or belief. We particularly welcome applications from colleagues from under-represented backgrounds. The successful applicant will be subject to an enhanced DBS, Barred List check and other recruitment checks in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education Safer Recruitment practices. This includes sourcing police checks for any period of time spent abroad and online searches.

An additional 30 pupils per year joined the school at Year 7 from September 2021 and an ambitious building programme (dining room, kitchen, science laboratory, computer suite and four classrooms) opened in January 2022.
