Job overview

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, dynamic and motivational individual to support the Director of Subject in ensuring that the programmes of study for all subjects within the Social Science Department are designed to meet statutory requirements, provide appropriate pace and challenge for all students and include regular opportunities for assessment and review. Subjects delivered within the Social Sciences Department are Psychology, Sociology and Law A Level, Health and Social Care (Cambridge Nationals level 2, and Cambridge Technicals level 3) and Criminology level 3 Wjec.

We are seeking to appoint a specialist in Psychology with an ability to teach Health and Social Care. You should be an excellent practitioner with the ability to model outstanding practice to others and lead a team of colleagues on their journey to fostering aspiration, enrichment and extended support for our students.

Many of our students go on to study Social Sciences or Law at university, as well as having a social science as one of their options to proceed to study business, nursing, medicine, teaching, marketing and many other subjects.

We are looking for a teacher who is committed to getting the best outcomes for all students and promoting the ethos and values of the school, a creative and innovative thinker who is able to deliver rapid school improvement.  We are seeking someone who has the ability to work under pressure and prioritise effectively with a ‘can do’ approach to work in school.

About Fortis Academy

This is a really exciting opportunity to work in a unique school with lots of inspiring and innovative opportunities. The campus consists of two schools, a Foundation Academy for students in KS3 and a Senior Academy for students in KS4 and 5.

Fortis Academy is sponsored by Shaw Education Trust. We are based in north Birmingham and have a large, diverse and vibrant community of students. We have a well-established and very successful Sixth Form.

We pride ourselves on our strong ethos which values inclusion, good citizenship, mutual respect and collaboration.  We aim to provide a wide range of stimulating opportunities to expand our students’ horizons within an environment in which they feel safe and well cared for and in which they can achieve their best, develop self-confidence and flourish as individuals.  We encourage the active participation of parents/carers in their children’s education; only when the school, the child and parents/carers are working together will children excel.

The Social Sciences sits within the Senior Academy. We expect all students to demonstrate the following characteristics in Senior Academy:

  • Can-do Attitude
  • High Expectations
  • Altruism
  • No Excuses
  • Compassion
  • Empathy

Our large and established Sixth Form, which is rated as ‘Good’ by OFSTED, specialises in providing high quality Level 3 qualifications and Level 3 ‘applied general’ qualifications.  Year on year we are getting more students into the top Russell Group universities and are significantly exceeding the national average in doing so.  The breadth of subjects offered provides both our students and our staff with great development opportunities.

Our students are drawn from a diverse community and, as OFSTED have noted, there is “comfortable cohesion” and our students “work together and play together well.”  Visitors frequently comment on the pleasant, lively and friendly atmosphere in the school and the great sense of energy and purpose among staff and students.

The school has strong, mutually beneficial links with local schools, universities, employers and community organisations.

Working at Fortis:

We are very committed to the continuous professional development of our staff, and have worked hard to embed sophisticated, innovative strategies to improve teaching and pupil outcomes across the school.  Many of our staff have chosen to develop their careers at the school or have returned to more senior roles after a period working in other schools.

We welcome applications from experienced teachers seeking an opportunity to teach in a supportive environment committed to high quality professional development.
