The Science Department at the British International School of Houston includes specialist teachers in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The Secondary Science department provides learning across the natural Sciences for students aged 11 to 18 years old.  Due to the growth of the school, we seek to employ an experienced Biology Teacher, to work with students in the Middle School (ages 9-14) and High School (15 – 18). The ideal candidate will be able to teach Biology at Middle school and experience teaching the IGCSE and IB curricular (or equivalent) in Biology will be desirable. 

Roles and Responsibilities

Wellbeing

  • A commitment to student wellbeing;

  • Have a vigilance for, and commitment to the wellbeing of those that we work alongside with;
  • Work with key school leaders and HR colleagues to ensure that HR policies and the NAE Code of Conduct are adhered to;
  • Ensure that the BIS Houston is an environment where all staff feel respected, included, valued and that they belong.

Engagement and Interaction 

  • Sets high expectations for students; inspiring, motivating and challenging students to achieve excellent progress and ambitious outcomes. 
  • Represents the school’s values in every interaction with students, parents and colleagues.
  • Demonstrates the highest levels of integrity, ethics and standards of professional conduct .
  • Actively and enthusiastically contributes beyond the classroom in the wider context of the school community. 
  • Acts as an advocate for the school in the wider community 
  • Participates in all aspects of the professional programme.
  • Assists in growing the school, share ideas, attending events and have a positive relationship with the MAC Team.
  • Can demonstrate an ongoing record of keeping up to date with teaching/coaching best practice
  • Reflects on their own practice, is open to feedback and dedicated to developing professionally.

Teaching and Learning

  • Has experience and the skills to deliver high quality teaching Biology at Middle School, IGCSE and IB or equivalent.
  • The ability to teach IB Environmental Systems and Societies is desirable
  • Engages and challenges student learning through questioning and discussion techniques and proven-pedagogical strategies. 
  • Creates a culture of learning and manages student behaviour to ensure an environment of respect and collaboration. 
  • Participates in all aspects of our learning programme, in line with school policy that assist in growing the school and are linked to the agreed learning programme 

Planning and Preparation

  • Sets clear learning intentions and educational outcomes. 
  • Designs lesson plans, activities and assessments that are aligned to the school’s curriculum and that engage students. 
  • Conceptualises, plans and teaches well-structured lessons and programmes that engage, inspire and stretch students; encouraging them to be ambitious 

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree 
  • Teaching Qualification (PGCE, Qualified Teacher Status)
  • Minimum 2 years teaching experience in Biology
  • IGCSE and IB Curriculum experience is desirable 
  • Good cross-cultural, interpersonal and communication skills to interact with diverse nationalities and cultures 
  • Excellent analytical skills - with the passion and drive to demonstrate and quantify success 
  • Excellent time management skills and flexibility in dealing with multi-functional tasks.

Selection Process

You must be able to meet visa-related restrictions for the Unites States of America (The Americas Region) including having British or American Citizenship or having authorization to work in the Unites States. If you are a British Citizen you must have a PGCE and/or QTS.

All post holders in regulated activity (having regular unsupervised contact with children) are subject to appropriate national and international vetting procedures including satisfactory criminal record checks from both your country of residence/birth and any country of residence within the last 10 years.
