Job overview

EAL refers to English as an Additional Language and is provided to students for whom English is not their first language and require some strengthening of their English language competence. Sometimes, an EAL teacher also teaches EAP which is English for Academic Purposes, typically to older students in the Middle Years section of the school (e.g. Grades 9 and 10) who require some strengthening of their English language competence. 


We require an EAL teacher who can also teach IB Diploma English B to Grades 11 and 12.


All teachers at ICS are responsible for ensuring that their practice inside and outside the classroom is in harmony with the educational philosophy of the school. All teachers are members of departmental, grade level and secondary teams and as such share responsibility for positively supporting school change as outlined in the school’s strategic plan.


Teachers need to demonstrate a strong commitment to the school’s shared cultural competencies, such as maintaining a collaborative ethos within the school. In addition, teachers need to embody an understanding of the social and emotional dimensions of learning as evidenced by their practice.


Responsibilities:


Teaching EAL and EAP classes within the Secondary age range (Grade 6 - Grade 12)

Teaching IB Diploma English B to Grades 11 and 12

Identifying students needing EAL support on entry and conducting individual assessments as needed,

Teaching the Personal Development Programme to the class for which he/she is a tutor

Participating in the co-teaching model as developed by the EAL and LS teams

Ensuring curriculum plans are up-to-date for the grade levels he/she teaches

Contributing positively to the collaborative culture of his/her teams by being an engaged participant in team and Secondary school meetings

Supporting the social and emotional well-being of students in their classes

Ensuring assessments support ongoing learning by providing timely, relevant and appropriate feedback to students on formative and summative assessments

Monitoring, assessing and recording each child’s progress and setting targets

Demonstrating effective classroom management that shows an understanding of the academic, social and emotional dimensions of learning

Using technology to enhance learning

Keeping parents informed about the learning of their children, and being proactive in communication with parents

Informing, in a timely manner that allows for early intervention, tutors and the Secondary Pastoral Leadership Team about issues of concern related to student welfare, achievement and behaviour

Constructing learning activities that challenge students and demonstrate an understanding of the diverse needs of the students in their classes

Supervising Personal Projects and Extended Essays as required

Contributing to the field trip programme

Assisting with the development of children’s social and academic language acquisition

Celebrating the cultural diversity of the school population and exploring links with our students’ home countries and first language

Creating and maintaining an orderly, safe, stimulating and informative classroom environment

Recording and reporting student progress following the procedures established by the school

Adhering to Secondary School deadlines

Assisting, as requested, with the cover of classes for absent colleagues 

Assisting, as requested, with the administration of exams

Liaising within the EAL Team to ensure that programme requirements are met

Informing Subject Teachers about issues of concern related to student welfare, achievement and behaviour

Keeping up to date with developments in the profession and studying relevant professional literature

Contributing to Extra-Curricular Activities to enhance the school experience for learners



Qualifications, Experience and Skills Required:


Current classroom teacher qualification

Bachelor’s degree

English as first language (‘mother tongue’)

Experience in an international school environment advantageous

Experience in teaching EAL, additional qualifications desired

Knowledge and experience of the IB Diploma and Middle Years programmes

Experience in teaching learners with diverse needs

Strong classroom management skills

Competence in using technology for both learning and information management purposes

Strong organisational skills

A specialist, up-to-date knowledge of language acquisition pedagogy

Knowledge of the developmental needs of children of 12 - 18 years

Empathy and social skills

Documented record of excellence in teaching

The ICS Inter-Community School, situated in Zürich, is a mainstream, mixed gender, all-through school located in Zurich. Established in 1960, the ICS now has over 800 students from 55 nationalities.

At the Primary School level The Inter-Community School covers the following subjects; Mathematics, Reading and Writing, The Arts, and Social Studies,
