Job overview

Teachers at ICS are responsible for ensuring that their practice inside and outside the classroom is in harmony with the educational philosophy of the school. All teachers are members of departmental, grade level and secondary teams and as such share responsibility for positively supporting school change as outlined in the school’s strategic plan.

Teachers need to demonstrate a strong commitment to maintaining a collaborative culture within the school. In addition, they need to embody an understanding of the social and emotional dimensions of learning.


Responsibilities

  • Teaching Learning Support classes from Grades 6 to 12
  • Teaching the Personal Development Programme to the class for which he/she is a tutor
  • Administering assessments e.g. Woodcock-Johnson Academic Test, Edinburgh Reading Test, Key Maths 3 or other.
  • Developing programmes to support students with cognitive, adaptive and or behavioural needs through remedial or extended support.
  • Co-teaching classes with mainstream teachers.
  • Advocating for all students.
  • Implementing varied accommodations and modifications in-class and to curriculum content as well as support teachers with accommodations for examinations.
  • Liaising with external professionals as needed e.g. educational consultants, psychologists and external therapists.
  • Supporting teachers in differentiating their programmes to meet the needs of all students.
  • Develop Individual Learning Plans (ILP) in consultation with the Head of Department, mainstream teachers, families and external consultants.
  • Ensuring that differentiation is provided for specific subjects and is documented in unit planners.
  • Contributing positively to the collaborative culture of his/her teams by being an engaged participant in departmental and Secondary School meetings.
  • Supporting the social and emotional well-being of the students within our learning support programme.
  • Liaising with the Head of Department and IB Coordinator(s) to ensure student support aligns with programme requirements.
  • Supporting students with developing the skills and strategies needed to demonstrate their capacity within formative and summative assessments for the subjects which they study.
  • Demonstrating effective classroom management that shows an understanding of the academic, social and emotional dimensions of learning.
  • Using technology to enhance learning.
  • Keeping parents informed about the learning of their children, and being proactive in communication with parents.
  • Informing tutors and the Secondary Pastoral Leadership Team about issues of concern related to student welfare, achievement and/or behaviour.
  • Constructing learning activities that challenge students and demonstrate an understanding of the diverse needs of the students in their classes.
  • Contributing to the planning and delivery of curricular units.
  • Supervising Personal Projects and Extended Essays as required.
  • Participating in student recognition processes including assemblies, academic and extracurricular awards ceremonies etc.
  • Contributing to the field trip programme.
  • Recording and reporting student progress following the procedures established by the school.
  • Adhering to Secondary School deadlines.
  • Assisting, as requested, with coverage of classes for absent colleagues.
  • Assisting, as requested, with the administration of exams.
  • Attending Student-Parent-Teacher Conferences as one means of providing feedback on students’ progress, attainment and learning targets.
  • Contributing to Extra-Curricular Activities to enhance the school experience for learners.


Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and current classroom teacher qualification to teach Learning Support 
  • Experience/knowledge of: various Learning Support models in international schools, various forms of IEP’s, strategies on how to implement various accommodations and modifications in-class and to curriculum content, processes of external assessments and understanding educational psychologists’ reports
  • Experience in teaching learners with diverse needs.
  • Enthusiasm for supporting learning
  • Skilled collaboration and a commitment teamwork
  • A positive attitude together with a solutions-focused approach towards education
  • An ongoing commitment to continually grow and learn as a professional
  • Minimum 4 years of recent and relevant Secondary School classroom experience.
  • Experience in an international school environment is advantageous.
  • Knowledge and experience of the IB Diploma and Middle Years programmes.
  • Excellent English communication skills.
  • Strong classroom management skills.
  • Competence in using technology for both learning and information management purposes.
  • Strong organisational skills.
  • Knowledge of the developmental needs of children of 12 - 18 years.
  • Empathy, compassion and social skills.

The ICS Inter-Community School, situated in Zürich, is a mainstream, mixed gender, all-through school located in Zurich. Established in 1960, the ICS now has over 800 students from 55 nationalities.

At the Primary School level The Inter-Community School covers the following subjects; Mathematics, Reading and Writing, The Arts, and Social Studies,
