We are seeking an outstanding SEN Assistant to join our thriving co-educational prep school in beautiful Hampstead. Main purpose of job:
· Working on a full fixed-term contract providing support for pupils either on a 1:1 basis or in small groups under the direction of the Head of Learning Support.
· Building a positive relationship with staff and pupils, enabling the pupils to be ready to learn and enabling them to access all areas of the curriculum.
· Work with children who have SEND & SEMH needs.
· Engage young people with a variety of barriers to their learning.
· Working with children on a 1:1 basis or as part of a small group
· Delivering lessons tailored to children’s needs as outlined in their individual education plan
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To aid pupils to learn as effectively as possible by:
· Liaising with the Head of Learning Support, class teachers and other professionals about individual education plans (IEPs).
· Taking the lead in planning and delivering lessons as appropriate for individual students and small groups. Support will be provided by Head of Learning Support.
· Implementing behaviour management strategies.
· Establishing supportive relationships with the pupil concerned and promoting the acceptance and inclusion of the pupil with SEND.
· Motivating and encouraging the pupil(s) as required by providing levels of individual attention, reassurance and help with learning tasks as appropriate.
· Marking work and providing regular feedback where necessary.
· Conducting reflections with pupils to understand and promote the effectiveness of performance.
· To support teachers and pupils to enable effective teaching and learning.
· To be alert and responsive to pupils’ needs at all times.
· To show a respectful and caring approach to pupils and other members of the team.
· To share expertise with others to enable a strong team approach.
· To work alongside others to manage pupils’ behaviour and encourage self-regulation through positive reinforcement and praise.
· To establish positive relationships with pupils and all members of the staff team.
· To facilitate learning with individual pupils or small groups as requested by the Head of Learning Support.
· To monitor and help with a child’s personal development.
· To display, present and preserve pupils’ work to a high standard, in a way that develops respect and self-esteem.
· To undertake any other duties as may be reasonably required by the learning and development department
· Prepare teaching materials and resources.
· Help students develop confidence, independence and encourage them to learn.
· Manage behaviour, mark work and talk to parents and carers about their children's progress in association with the Head of Learning Support.
· Work with specialist teaching services, medical staff, counsellors and educational psychologists
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
· GCSEs or equivalent at a Grade C/4 and above including Maths and English
· A levels at a Grade C or above
· Level 2/3 SEN Teaching Assistant course and/or experience
· Higher Level Teaching Assistant course and/or experience
Desirable
· Degree or working towards completing a degree in Education related subject
Relevant experience
Essential
· Have experience of supporting children with SEND either in an education setting or in clubs/ organisations working with young children.
· Have a passion for inclusive practice and equality of opportunity.
· Able to work alongside colleagues and ensure that appropriate interventions are put in place to support a child.
· Able to monitor the progress of a child and feedback to parents/teaching staff and external organisations where appropriate in association with the Head of Learning Support.
Desirable
· 1 year experience working with children.
· Experience of delivering a personalised learning programme for individuals and small groups.
· Commitment to and understanding of Safeguarding.
· Experience in engaging young people with often complex and challenging behaviours.
