JOB DESCRIPTION – SEN Class Teacher

Purpose of the Post:

The main purpose of the post is to be the driving force for educational delivery within our school, providing the high quality teaching and learning, alongside securing the welfare of the young people within the class. The duties outlined in this job description are in addition to those covered by the latest School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document.

Level of Post:

Responsible to the Department Coordinator / Assistant Principal in which you work, Vice Principal and ultimately the Principal.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Teaching and Learning

·        Set high expectations which inspire, motivate and challenge pupils.

·        Promote good progress and outcomes by pupils.

·        Demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge.

·        Plan and teach well-structured lessons.

·        Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils.

·        Make accurate and productive use of assessment.

·        Manage behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe learning environment.

·        Fulfil wider professional responsibilities.

Leadership

·        Lead a class team.

·        Provide clear guidance to Teaching Assistants

·        Help to disseminate good practice across the Academy.

Personal and Professional Conduct

·        Teachers are to follow the expected Teacher Standards.

·        Teachers uphold public trust in the profession and maintain high standards of ethics and behaviour, within and outside school, by:

o  Treating pupils with dignity, building relationships rooted in mutual respect, and at all times observing proper boundaries appropriate to Teacher’s in professional position.

o  Having regard for the need to safeguard pupils’ well-being, in accordance with statutory provisions.

o  Showing tolerance of and respect for the rights of others

o  Not undermining fundamental British Values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect, and tolerance of those with difference faiths and beliefs.

o  Ensuring that personal beliefs are not expressed in a way which exploit pupils’ vulnerability or might lead them to break the law

Personal and Professional Conduct cont.

·     Teachers must have proper and professional regard for the ethos, policies and practices of the school in which they teach and maintain high standards in their own attendance and punctuality.

·     Teachers must have an understanding of and always act within the statutory frameworks which set out their professional duties and responsibilities.

Having due regard to the requirements of the National Curriculum, the schools aims and objectives, schemes of work, and to adhere to the policies and procedures adopted by the Trustees of the academy.

Severndale Specialist Academy caters for children and young people from 3-25 years old. We are a large special school with over 400 pupils and students on role.

We cater for a wide variety of needs from PMLD to MLD, on three separate sites; our main site, an MLD base at a mainstream high school, and provision at Shrewsbury College, our local FE College.

We have excellent facilities, a dedicated and well-trained staff group and very good links with a wide range of agencies. We are extremely well supported by our parents and carers.
