SEN Class Teacher (Primary School)

£32,161 - £37,278 per annum (plus potential TLR allowance)Muswell Hill, LondonFull Time

TreeHouse School is a happy and vibrant community where children and young people with autism learn, thrive and achieve. We have over 90 pupils on roll, ranging from 5 – 19 years of age. All pupils in the school have a diagnosis of autism and have TreeHouse School named in their Statement or EHC plan. The school was inspected by Ofsted in October 2012 and found to be outstanding in all areas – the first ABA School in the country to secure that grade.

Our approach is based on our values. It is person centred and uses behavioural principles to help individuals to achieve their full potential. The focus is on the learning needs of each individual. Every person is unique and has a unique experience of the world. We work closely with the child or young person and their family and carers to identify the things that are important to them and use these aspirations to plan an appropriate learning programme that includes the National Curriculum. It is this personalised and collaborative approach which enables us to provide the highest quality teaching, learning and support.

We are seeking an outstanding and inspirational teacher, ideally with training and experience in EYFS/Primary and/or KS3, to join our Lower School teaching team.

  • Has experience of teaching children with SEN (in a mainstream or special setting) and ideally experience of teaching children with autism
  • Has a clear understanding of our school context and a passion to work with our amazing pupils to enable them to achieve and progress
  • Has the ability and experience, (or ambition in the future) to lead and co-ordinate one or more of our core curriculum areas (including either English or Maths)
  • Is passionate, ambitious and highly motivated to develop their teaching and potentially leadership skills and knowledge
  • Has knowledge or experience of ABA and/or a willingness to learn (more) about how this approach supports effective learning
  • Is particularly interested in working as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Behaviour Analysts and specialist teachers
  • Has a sound understanding of, and commitment to, safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people
  • Has high expectations of self and others (colleagues and pupils)
  • Has excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and to communicate with parents, carers and external professionals
  • Has experience of leading and supporting the development of colleagues through coaching or mentoring.

We offer:

  • Amazing children and supportive, talented and committed colleagues
  •  A dynamic and energetic environment focused on delivering our vision and ethos
  • A comprehensive induction programme and excellent opportunities for CPD in areas including autism, leadership and coaching
  • A purpose-built building and well resourced learning environment
  • The opportunity to join an ambitious and growing organisation that is determined to deliver the best possible outcomes for our pupils and excellent career development for our staff

TreeHouse School is a non-maintained special school that was founded in 1997. Based in the heart of a thriving community in north London, it educates autistic pupils aged three to 19 from across London and the Home Counties.

Using the Ambitious Approach to education, pupils receive specialist and personalised support through a dedicated transdisciplinary team of qualified teachers, speech therapists, occupational therapists and behaviour specialists.

TreeHouse School works hand in hand with parents and carers, local schools, community groups and employers to maximise opportunities for pupils to enjoy school, succeed in their learning and transition to a fulfilling and rewarding adult life.

Our visions, values and ethos:

Our core beliefs and values provide the foundation for our approach to service delivery. We believe that early diagnosis and intervention is critical to giving all autistic children the best start in life. Effective education has the power to transform their lives and help them reach their potential and to raise expectations for their future.

We are committed to providing high-quality, specialist teaching, learning and support to improve the life chances of those we work with. We believe that the views and choices of children and young people should shape services and because those choices will vary it is essential that a range of educational provision is available.

We also recognise the vital role that parents and carers play in supporting young people to make decisions about their future lives. We are committed therefore to ensuring that we work closely with autistic young people and their families.

Our values are reflected by our commitment to education services which:

  • focus on the best possible outcomes for children, young people, and their families, based on their aspirations and priorities
  • adopt a person-centred approach which ensures that the voice of the young person is at the centre of all we do
  • provide outstanding teaching, learning, and support through a behavioural approach
  • ensure high-quality provision through practice that is reflective and evidence-based
  • work in the best interests of the individual and their family through an effective multidisciplinary approach
  • secure better life chances for autistic children and young people by developing partnerships that support effective transition and a range of appropriate pathways into adulthood.

TreeHouse School pupils follow three core school values:

  • Be safe
  • Make responsible choices
  • Do your best

Our Curriculum:

Our curriculum is tailored to each pupil’s unique qualities, specific needs, and individual starting points. In this way, we can set accurate targets for progress.

In our individualised learning programmes, we assess each pupil extensively and consider their strengths and what they find more challenging. Our curriculum is creative and flexible, using our natural environment to extend pupils’ learning. You are as likely to see maths being practised in the shop, the community or the garden as you are in the classroom. Where appropriate, our curriculum is linked to and, where necessary, differentiated from the National Curriculum’s requirements.

Our personalised curriculum is:

  • individually planned
  • specialised
  • intensive
  • goal-directed
  • guided by pupil performance.

What is like to learn here:

Pupils at TreeHouse School enjoy many educational trips, including visits to the local shops and cafés, or places of interest in London and further afield. Educational visits are an important part of the vibrant curriculum experience.

TreeHouse School also plays a key role in the local community, having long-established links with organisations and businesses in Muswell Hill and across north London.
