Supporting transformation in a dynamic

Brent is a tremendously vibrant London borough where the iconic arch of Wembley Stadium dominates the skyline. Spanning both inner and outer London, it is a borough of huge contrasts in terms of its economic, environmental, ethnic and social make up. Brent’s diversity is evident to all who visit our borough and our long history of ethnic and cultural diversity has created a place that is truly unique and valued by those who live and work here.

The council is pursuing a far-reaching transformation agenda that better meets the needs of our community so it is an exciting time to join us.

The Post

This is an exciting time to join a busy, committed and motivated team responsible for the assessment and review of children and young people with special educational needs (SEN) in Brent. This opportunity has come about due to the SEND Reforms which came into force in September 2014.

The Special Educational Needs Assessment Service is looking for people with experience in the area of SEN within a local authority or a school context and to be able to demonstrate a broad range of skills to work with other agencies to secure the best possible outcomes for children and young people.

The post will manage and deliver high quality services for children with a broad range of educational needs. This will involve working closely with parents, carers, schools and a range of other agencies and managing a designated caseload of complex cases. The role also calls for an understanding of law and procedures relating to the SEND Code of Practice and the Children and Families Act 2014.

The Person

You will be a superb communicator at all levels with strong influencing and negotiating skills, highly organised and have an excellent level of literacy. An understanding of law and procedures relating to the SEND Code of Practice and the Children and Families Act 2014 is essential for this role. Previous experience of working within a SEN setting involving a range of professionals is required as well as a good knowledge of SEN in an education based environment.

You will be IT literate with good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, be highly numerate, able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing whilst working to tight deadlines.

In view of the new Special Educational Needs Legislation the post holder will gain new experiences to support their future development in this field and to contribute to the implementation of the Children and Families Act 2014 and represent the Local Authority at the Special Educational Needs & Disability Tribunal.

Closing Date: 8 June 2016 (23:59)
Assessment & Interview Date: w/c 20 June 2016
