The role:

• The SENCO will work closely with the Principal, Head of Primary and Head of Secondary to raise educational achievement by leading and coordinating provision for students with special education needs across the whole school.

• SENCO will ensure strategic development of the school's Special Educational Needs (SEN) provision and oversee the day-to-day operation of that policy with the aim of raising SEN student achievement.

• Whole-school teaching and learning responsibility in the area of Inclusion, with a focus on SEN/EAL and G &T provision, transition and the tracking of vulnerable groups.

Requirements:

  • Degree in Education or any relevant subject;
  • Professional Teaching Qualification;
  • Post-graduate Degree in SEND and Inclusion (e.g. Masters or NASENCo);
  • Proven track record of outstanding teaching and learning with SEN students in a Secondary School setting, preferably in an international school;
  • Previous Leadership experience in a school setting, preferably in a secondary school setting;
  • KHDA/DISB experience is desirable;
  • Strong commitment to raising the educational attainment for children and young people with SEN, including working with students directly and supporting other staff to do so.
  • Willingness and ability to develop specialist knowledge and keep up to date with the IB and KHDA policy and developments. 
  • Influencing and negotiation skills – to influence school strategy and policy, secure sufficient internal resources and secure the necessary support from external agencies.
  • Leadership skills – to inspire and motivate other teachers, model good practice and develop a whole school commitment to supporting students with SEN.
  • Interpersonal skills – for building relationships with parents, teachers and external professionals.
  • Written communication skills – for writing learning and support plans, reports on student progress and training and guidance for staff.
  • Organisation and time management skills – needed for prioritizing and balancing a busy and varied workload.
  • Empathy and emotional intelligence – to recognise and ne sensitive to the needs of the students and parents.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills - necessary for analysing school, local and national data and developing strategies and interventions.
  • High level of IT Skills;
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to contribute to the general welfare of the School.
