Cambian Whinfell School is on the edge of the Lake District which is a wonderful place to live. The school and attached children’s home accommodates up to 16 boys aged 11-19. All our young people have diagnoses of AS or ASD, they are high-functioning and some have associated difficulties. Whinfell is a leading provider in a specialist field and our youngsters are amazingly rewarding to work with. We offer mainstream educational opportunities and since 2012 we have been judged ‘Outstanding’ in both care and education.
Candidate Profile:
We are looking for somebody who has drive and vision, who is passionate about teaching and learning and is committed to delivering high-quality outcomes. We want someone who can connect with and engage young people in a fun and creative way. If you really want to change lives and make an impact, this is the place for you.
Our teaching takes place in small class groups with teaching assistant support. Working as part of a committed team, we need someone who can cater for the diverse needs of our students.
You need to have a proven track record of successfully teaching to GCSE and would be expected to deliver PE and a Humanities subject.
The successful candidate will be:
• Foremost, a highly effective teacher – you do not necessarily have to be a subject specialist or have prior SEN experience.
• Well-organised and able to create a structured learning environment
• Practical, creative and inventive
• Enthusiastic and energetic
• Effective at employing a wide range of communication skills
• Looking to develop expertise in special needs and Autism
• Dynamic and proactive
• Able to contribute to the school’s multi - disciplinary team approach
• Able to manage complex behaviours
• Experienced in preparing students to at least GCSE standard
• Passionate about teaching with the ability to plan and deliver inspiring lessons
• An excellent classroom manager with good organisational skills
• Focused on the progress of students, with a detailed understanding of assessment
• Willing to contribute to cross- and extra-curricular initiatives and teach outside the classroom.
• Experienced in SEND
The main responsibilities are creating and delivering long- and medium-term plans, in lesson planning, delivering the curriculum to a class group and supporting students with AS/ASD in learning activities and personal skills. You will have the opportunity to work as part of a skilled multi-disciplinary team, aiming to expand the horizons and improve the knowledge and skills of the young people in your care.
We deliver expert care and education whilst incorporating opportunities for staff and students to experience the fun side of life. The role is challenging and extremely rewarding and the team is tight-knit. We have successful experience of supporting newly qualified teachers through the induction year and would welcome applications from newly qualified teachers.
