About Denby Grange School

Welcome to Denby Grange, an independent school in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, offering both day and residential placements. Our alternative education programme is designed to provide pupils with the specialised support they need, going beyond what mainstream schools can offer. Set in a tranquil, rural environment, Denby Grange creates a nurturing space where students feel valued and understood.

Our Mission and Aims

At Denby Grange, we are committed to fostering each pupil's self-respect, self-confidence, and self-reliance. Our goal is to help young people grow with a strong sense of loyalty, honesty, and personal integrity. We understand that students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs require patience, care, and tailored support, rather than simply being seen as disruptive. We listen to them and provide individualised education programmes that meet their unique needs.

What Sets Us Apart

Denby Grange School views behaviours often seen as “challenging” as forms of self-protection, stemming from past experiences of rejection or isolation. Our approach is to support and understand rather than judge. By focusing on each pupil’s individual challenges, we create pathways for positive development and personal growth, recognising that our students may need more time and tailored interventions to flourish.

Expertise and Curriculum

We offer pupils the chance to achieve nationally recognised qualifications in core subjects such as English, Maths, Science, Personal and Social Development, PSHE, Design Technology, and Food Technology, alongside internal accreditations that reflect their academic progress and achievements. To meet the diverse needs of our pupils, Denby Grange maintains a high staff-to-pupil ratio, ensuring each child receives the attention and support they deserve.
