Job overview

The Role:

Great Barr Academy is a large school with a very diverse population of children who have a wide variety of needs.

We have a holistic, integrated approach to responding to barriers to learning through our Inclusion Support Unit which encompasses SEN, EAL and a nurture curriculum. We have a curriculum stream which is tailored to the needs of students who are unlikely to be able to access GCSE qualifications at KS4.

Reporting directly to the Assistant Head Teacher (Inclusion), you will provide both the strategic and operational lead on all issues related to SEN, ensuring that the appropriate provision is in place for each child, that the large team of specialist teachers and teaching assistants are deployed effectively to best meet the needs of the children, and that the school is complying with its legal obligations.

You will be joining a very united team who are working together well under strong and compassionate leadership to drive our school forward.  As part of the Shaw Education Trust, we have access to considerable expertise and support in SEN provision.

The Candidate:

You must hold both QTS and the National Award for Special Educational Needs Coordination or be near to completion of the course. You will have extensive experience of leading and shaping SEN provision, preferably having worked as SENCO in a smaller school. You will be highly organised and clear thinking and you will be able to demonstrate that you can interpret and respond appropriately to achievement data. You will have well developed leadership and management skills and the ability to influence and persuade.

About Us:

Fortis Academy is sponsored by Shaw Education Trust. We are based in north Birmingham and have a large, diverse and vibrant community of students. We have a well-established and very successful Sixth Form.

We pride ourselves on our strong ethos which values inclusion, good citizenship, mutual respect and collaboration.  We aim to provide a wide range of stimulating opportunities to expand our students’ horizons within an environment in which they feel safe and well cared for and in which they can achieve their best, develop self-confidence and flourish as individuals.  We encourage the active participation of parents/carers in their children’s education; only when the school, the child and parents/carers are working together will children excel.

Our large and established Sixth Form, which is rated as ‘Good’ by OFSTED, specialises in providing high quality Level 3 qualifications and Level 3 ‘applied general’ qualifications.  Year on year we are getting more students into the top Russell Group universities and are significantly exceeding the national average in doing so.  The breadth of subjects offered provides both our students and our staff with great development opportunities.

Our students are drawn from a diverse community and, as OFSTED have noted, there is “comfortable cohesion” and our students “work together and play together well.”  Visitors frequently comment on the pleasant, lively and friendly atmosphere in the school and the great sense of energy and purpose among staff and students.

The school has strong, mutually beneficial links with local schools, universities, employers and community organisations.

Working at Fortis:

We are very committed to the continuous professional development of our staff, and have worked hard to embed sophisticated, innovative strategies to improve teaching and pupil outcomes across the school.  Many of our staff have chosen to develop their careers at the school or have returned to more senior roles after a period working in other schools.

We have a highly developed and well established programme for providing NQT’s with the necessary support to achieve a successful and smooth first year in their new careers.  It has been described as ‘an exemplar of good practice’ and is frequently praised by our partner teacher training institutions.  Fortis Academy is an excellent place to build a career.
