Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a well-qualified and enthusiastic professional to join the team at Prendergast School from September 2023. The postholder will assist the Assistant Headteacher – Behaviour & Welfare with the strategic development of SEND policy and provision. In consultation with external agencies, the SENCo identifies and meets the needs of children with special educational needs, whilst ensuring the systems are co-ordinated, evaluated and regularly reviewed.

The post holder will review targets and support plans with parents, children, colleagues and relevant outside agencies in order to agree and communicate targets and help children achieve their maximum potential. Previous experience in a similar role or attainment of the National Award for SEN Co-ordination (or equivalent) would be an advantage. You will also line manage the Learning Support Team, ensuring that support staff are deployed to meet the needs of SEND students.

Prendergast School is an Outstanding 11-16 Girls School with a mixed 6th Form and benefits from being part of the Leathersellers’ Federation of Schools. It is one of the most successful schools in Lewisham. Awarded its third Outstanding OFSTED grading in a row in November 2013, the school has been leading girls’ education in Lewisham for over 130 years.  The school currently holds the NACE Award, the Wellbeing Award and the Gold Artsmark Award.

We are committed to providing excellent CPD and all new staff complete a comprehensive and supportive induction programme. The successful candidate will also have access to a rich and varied CPD programme within the school and across the Federation.

You will have the opportunity to work with a forward-thinking staff and school leadership team who have students’ wellbeing, development and progress as their core purpose.

We are dedicated to creating a work environment that our colleagues can enjoy, our students can benefit from, and where work complements life. For this reason, we encourage everyone to discuss with us their flexible working requirements during the recruitment process so that we can find the best working solution for them and their role.

Welcome to Prendergast School.  It is an honour and a privilege to be Prendergast School’s eleventh Headteacher and to work with staff, students and families.  Staff here are passionate about ensuring the very best opportunities and education for all students.  Our motto and ethos is ‘Truth, Honour, Freedom and Courtesy.’  We are all on the same side, working to support all students to excel.  We take pride in building strong relationships with students and their families.

We have a long history of providing exceptional education to young people.  We were founded in 1880 as Prendergast Grammar School for Girls on a site in Catford provided by the Leathersellers’ Company, which then funded the school’s move to its current site in 1995.

We are now part of the Leathersellers’ Federation of schools, a group of three secondary and two primary schools as well as Prendergast 6th Form.  We are very fortunate to be part of the Federation and receive a lot of support from the Leathersellers’ Company, that helps our students succeed.

We are very proud of our last Ofsted judgement of Outstanding in all areas, our third Outstanding judgement in a row. We are described in the most recent report as ‘exceptional’ and having ‘exemplary attitudes to learning’ across the school. We do achieve great academic results at Prendergast School (more information is on the website).

We value our talented and hardworking employees and know that in order to continue to succeed in our aims it is essential for us to support and develop them and ensure we continue to be a great place to work.

With this in mind we offer a number of employee benefits.

Kelly Lovegrove

Headteacher
