The School

Nugent House School is an independent Residential Special School, registered for up to 60 students (with up to 8 boarders) aged between 7 and 19. There are currently 54 students on roll. Pupils are referred to the school by their local authorities in response to their needs not being met in other educational provisions. We currently have students referred from the vast majority of ‘close’ local authorities (St. Helens, Warrington, Knowsley, Lancashire, Halton, Liverpool, Wirral, Sefton & Trafford) as well as further afield (L.B. Newham). Many students have experienced significant negative prior experiences of education, including extensive periods of non-attendance. Originally opened in 1983 as a school for boys, it is now co-educational.

All students at the school are placed with an EHCP, with SEMH identified as the primary placement need. Many have a diagnosis of ASC, and a significant number a co-morbid, with additional diagnosis of ADHD, ODD, OCD, PDA, etc.

Beyond this, a significant number of students face additional challenges, with 45% of the students having ongoing, existing Social Care involvement & over 80% having experienced involvement with Children’s Services at some point in their lives.

The school is situated in the pleasant residential district of Billinge, surrounded by attractive countryside. The provision of the School's own transport and excellent local facilities giving access to the national motorway and rail systems makes readily available the nearby National Parks of the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Peak District and Snowdonia, as well as the urban conurbations of Liverpool and Manchester.
