Overview of the role:

The SENCO is an experienced teacher with a passion for supporting pupils with special educational needs.

Main Duties & Responsibilities (SENCO):

  • To assist with the development of the the school’s SEN policy and provision
  • To carry out assessments of pupils with SEN needs and monitor progress
  • Liaison with pupils, parents and other relevant professionals to develop, implement and monitor pupil learning
  • To support parents with applications for SENA funding and initial EHCP applications
  • To develop schemes of work and learning programmes for pupils with SEN
  • To be involved in the regular frequent review of each individual’s progress in line with short and long term targets, including annual reviews
  • To ensure annual review paperwork is completed accurately and in line with statutory timescales
  • To ensure pupils receive the correct provision to make progress and is in line with any EHCP documentation
  • To prepare tribunal information and attend tribunal hearings if required
  • To assist in the admissions process of prospective pupils
  • To assist in ensuring that all databases and documentation are up to date
  • To regularly write detailed reports to parents in line with the school policy
  • To provide advice, guidance and training to teaching and support staff

Main Duties and responsibilities (SLS Teacher):

  • To plan, prepare and teach individual pupils Literacy and Numeracy in mainly small groups, but on a 1:1 basis when required.
  • To advise and work with secondary and primary teachers when offering in class support teaching.
  • To mark, through comments and targets, all pupil’s work and plan accordingly.
  • To take small group Specialist Support classes where help and support is required for students to achieve their potential in their subjects. Also to support sixth formers in their studies.
  • To liaise and report to the Head of Learning Development, staff and parents concerning individual pupil’s progress.
  • To monitor each pupil’s progress through the use of pupil passports and lesson records.
  • To be involved in the regular frequent review of each individual’s progress in line with short and long term targets, including annual reviews.
  • To assess each student taught using standardised assessments as recommended by the Head of Learning Development
  • To assist in ensuring that all databases and documentation are up to date
  • To regularly write detailed reports to parents in line with the school policy
  • Ensure that stock and equipment are readily available and used economically
  • Advise the Head of Learning Development on the purchase of specialist books and resources for the library and access centre
