Tes is supporting the appointment of a SENCO to join a close-knit team at a school based in Wakefield. 

About the Role

No two days are the same at the school so they want staff who can work at pace to turn ‘can’t do’ into ‘want to’ and are motivated by working with pupils with complex needs. The ideal candidate will enjoy working with pupils in a calm and engaging demeanour, whilst being resilient using an innovative style of teaching motivated by your belief that every pupil can achieve and reach their potential.

Main purpose

The SENCO, under the direction of the headteacher, will:

  • Determine the strategic development of special educational needs (SEN) policy and provision in the school.
  • Be responsible for day-to-day operation of the SEN policy and co-ordination of specific provision to support individual pupils with SEN or a disability.
  • Provide professional guidance to colleagues, working closely with staff, parents, and other agencies.

Qualifications

  • National Award for SEN Co-ordination, or a willingness to complete it within 3 years of appointment.
  • Degree

Experience

  • Teaching/ HLTA experience
  • Experience of working at a whole-school level
  • Involvement in self-evaluation and development planning

The school is an independent specialist day school for boys and girls aged from 5 to 19, catering for pupils with a wide range of needs in 4 sites across Wakefield. Their dedicated team work together to ensure successful outcomes for pupils who often arrive at the school with a troubled view of education and life.

They pride themselves in steering pupils in the right direction, nurturing aspiration to progress them both academically and socially to encourage them to take pride in their achievements. Socially, they build confidence in their students, so they are able to have a greater understanding of the wider community in which they live.

The school have a team of fantastic multi-disciplinary specialists who work closely together to find creative tailored solutions to support the emotional development to make a positive life changing difference to our students.
