We're seeking a passionate and visionary SENCo with exceptional leadership skills to play a significant role in building the strategic vision and the continued development of our special needs provision.
About the role:
This role is crucial in leading and managing the provision for students with special educational needs and disabilities, ensuring that each student receives the support they need to achieve their full potential. We are looking for a first-class candidate with the energy and resilience to ensure our school is an outstanding place to learn.
We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, committed and child-focused SENCo who will champion children with SEND and be their advocate. You will be responsible for leading and coordinating an innovative and evidence-based provision for children who have SEND and working with all staff to ensure their needs are met and they thrive.
With Qualified Teacher Status and the desire to enrol and complete relevant SEND CPD and qualifications (if not already qualified), you will have experience of working with parents to support SEND children and proven ability as an excellent classroom teacher. You will bring to the role your knowledge and thorough understanding of statutory regulations in relation to SEND and equality and have experience of working with a multitude of external agencies.
To be successful, you will:
- Ensure our SEND provision is both efficiently and effectively managed.
- Provide professional guidance in the area of SEND in order to secure high-quality teaching.
- Monitor the progress of objectives and targets for pupils with SEND, evaluating the effectiveness of teaching and learning to guide improvements.
About us:
Kettlethorpe High School is a large and popular maintained school in Wakefield, near to the M1 and with excellent links to Sheffield, Leeds and Kirklees. We continue to flourish and are the school of choice within the local area. We are often oversubscribed and are currently planning for a larger cohort entry that will see new capital building work and a potential 11–16 roll of 1,800 pupils.
This supports the wider development of our pupils, and this was endorsed by Ofsted in June 2022 when they inspected the school and described pupils’ personal development as ‘being noteworthy’. We are proud of this, as the character of a person does much to support their life chances.
Our school is a very friendly place to work, and a strong sense of shared community exists. We have an excellent extra-curricular offer which really is valued by our school community. We also have strong values and believe in supporting others. The school community is also very charitable, and over the last ten years, our school community has raised over £110,000 for Children in Need and other local and national charities.
Benefits include:
- The opportunity to make a tangible impact on the lives of young people.
- The opportunity to work with an exceptional team of staff who are committed to the success and welfare of every child in our school.
- High-quality professional development.
- Access to an employee assistance scheme offering a range of wellbeing and health support initiatives, including counselling, physiotherapy, and menopause and weight management support.
- An environment where innovation and inspirational ideas are encouraged.

About Kettlethorpe High School
Kettlethorpe High School is a large comprehensive school in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. We have 1,700 pupils aged 11–16 and often see year group entries of between 330 to 360 pupils.
The school opened in 1965, and we have benefitted from considerable capital building improvements over the years. Recently, the school has had a new MFL block and sports studio built and also financed our own all-weather 3G pitch for school and community use.
Pupils benefit from a rich and broad curriculum offer. At Key Stage 4, our English Baccalaureate entry and actual figures are the very best in Wakefield. In 2021, the entry was 79% with 61% achieving passes across the EBacc suite of subjects. At this school, pupils succeed and do well. Progression rates are impressive.
Across the school, the wider life of the school and extra-curricular offer is second to none. Pupils and staff engage with a rich extra-curricular offer and we are very proud of our sports, arts and performing arts offer. It adds a real richness to our school community.
Our pupils are great and have lots to say about their school. They support and represent their community well. Over the last 9 years, they have raised over £103,000 for Children in Need. Most years, they raise between £10,000 and £15,000 for CiN and other charities.
Teachers at the school work hard to support all our pupils. They are proud of their successes and involvement with the school.
As a school community, we recognise that schools are more than just Ofsted judgements. We do what we do to benefit our pupil community first and foremost. That said, we are more than a ‘good’ school and valued the comment made by one lead inspector… ‘There is something very special going on at this school.’ We agree!
