Job overview

Tes is supporting the appointment of a SENCo with Teaching Responsibilities to join a school group based in Newham.

They are seeking a primary qualified teacher, to lead on SEN Coordination for their primary nurture-specific provision, as well as deliver a teaching timetable. This role would suit an individual who has held some leadership responsibility, and is looking to fully develop their SENCo expertise within a specialist school. You will deliver their school group five-part curriculum throughout the week according to the Principles of Nurture and the Principles of Therapeutic Education, with a strong focus on concrete, creative and playful teaching methods.

You will manage and coordinate the provision of SEND support and ensure appropriate pupil-centred support of bespoke needs, as set out in individual Education, Health and Care Plans. You will ensure that pupils' voice is delivered within annual reviews and that interventions are appropriate.

The provision caters for Key Stage 2 pupils with complex needs who require an intensive nurturing and therapeutic approach to enable them to access the curriculum.

This school group is an independent social enterprise, providing specialist education based in London, supporting exceptional neurodiverse children and young people aged 7 to 19 who have special educational needs and disabilities typically associated with autism, social emotional and mental health needs and associated disorders. Most of them will have experienced multiple placement breakdowns and significant trauma, often resulting in behaviour that challenges. On average pupils will have been excluded from other provisions up to three times before reaching them and had significant periods out of education.

They provide a happy, safe and secure learning environment where pupils grow in independence, form positive relationships and feel valued and respected. Through the nurture approach, pupils will improve their cognitive functioning and ability to learn through better emotional regulation.

Essential requirements to be successful in the role are:

  • Be a Qualified Primary Teacher (holding QTS or QTLS) with post-qualification teaching experience in either the Primary or SEND sector, with experience of middle or senior leadership.
  • Holding the National Award for SEN Coordination or willing to complete in role.
  • Demonstrable experience of raising outcomes for pupils with neurodiverse needs whilst promoting a culture of inclusion.
  • Experience of managing neurodiverse children with SEND, including ASC and/or SEMH, with an understanding of potential implications for communication, learning and behaviour.
  • Able to act as a positive role model, providing nurturing approach, building key relationships with pupils and their families.
  • An interest in using therapeutic education principles to provide a holistic approach to learning.

In return they offer:

  • Competitive salary and terms and conditions.
  • An opportunity to make a real difference and join a leading provider of specialist education, directly contributing towards positive outcomes for pupils with SEMH and ASC.
  • Excellent CPD opportunities with all staff provided an individual Learning & Development Plan to support career development, including education qualifications at all levels (QTS / QTLS / NPQs) and options to take progressive registered Level 3 – 5 qualifications in Therapeutic Education.
  • Comprehensive induction process, including all pupil-facing staff supported in receiving the Level 3 Award in Therapeutic Education and Group Process.
  • Regular half termly staff wellbeing days.
  • A range of employee support and wellbeing benefits including their employee assistance programme, counselling and contributions towards medical costs and an exclusive rewards platform.
