Job overview

Vale of York Academy is looking to appoint a Special Educational Needs Coordinator from April 2017: TLR2c (6093.00).

This post represents an exciting opportunity to join a forward looking and rapidly improving comprehensive, a school with a new leadership team consisting of 4 staff from outstanding schools and has significant capacity for improvement. The school’s motto of “Always giving the best” permeates  all aspects of school life, and the message that it is only our imagination that limits how high we achieve is common to all we do. The future for the school is an extremely exciting one and we see this role as key to improving the life chances for the students in our care.

The core focus of the role of SENCo is working with and under the Vice Principal: Student Welfare in removing barriers to learning. Central to this is fulfilling all aspects of the role of Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator including responsibility for the SEND register, staff training and development, timetabling, assessment, reviews, and representing the school as required.  The ability to work closely and positively within school guidelines, procedures and expectations with colleagues at all levels of responsibility, both within and beyond the school, is essential.  The post holder must also have a good understanding of SEND issues, a calm and empathetic approach and be able to work under pressure and keep to tight deadlines. They must have a clear understanding and knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice and there is an expectation that the successful candidate will have, or work towards the National Award for SEN Co-ordination (NasenCo).

The successful candidate will also be expected to support the values of the academy. To offer a real quality of education and range of opportunities, we will therefore be looking to appoint a colleague who will make a full contribution to whole-school as well as to subject matters. Clubs, trips and events – including charity fundraising, volunteering, Citizenship days, extra-curricular opportunities, productions, curriculum visits and social trips – form an important part of school life. So do out of hours learning, booster classes, revision classes, and a full range of intervention and support. These points should be emphasised in your application.   Application and interview All applications will be considered on merit. Candidates should produce a letter of application no more than 2 sides of A4. The closing date is Monday 30th January, noon. It is planned to hold interviews the following week, and an early application is warmly encouraged.

Vale of York Academy is one of many Hope Sentamu Learning Trust secondary schools. Vale of York has undergone a period of transformation and rapid improvement since joining the Trust in 2017. Recently judged as ‘Good’ by Ofsted, this is an exciting time for the academy and will be an exciting opportunity for an ambitious educational professional to join the team. This is a great career opportunity, a chance to work in a close knit community but with extensive opportunities for professional development across the Trust as a whole.

Vale of York is an 11-16 comprehensive school which serves a mixed catchment extending from the City Centre of York to the satellite village of Skelton on the northern edge of the City. The academy is over-subscribed; it has a growing population of more than 600 students who enter the school with attainment at around national averages, but with an increasing number of high attainers and gifted and talented pupils. Our commitment to every child is absolute and we strive to meet the needs of all our pupils whether they are capable of achieving ten Grade 9’s at GCSE or require the support of a full time teaching assistant or individual package of learning in order to reach their full potential. We believe that Vale of York should be the first choice school for every student in our immediate catchment and that we have an important role in transforming the lives of all our young people and their community.

Vale of York is a community school which expects each individual to be their very best by accepting personal responsibility and always striving to do better. These expectations extend far beyond learning. We expect the highest standards of behaviour, creating an environment where students feel safe, sanctions are applied fairly and positive contributions are recognised and rewarded. We have a strong commitment to the personal development of your young people, which we believe enables them to responsible citizens who go on to play their part in improving their community.
