Job overview

Based in the heart of Chester City Centre, Abbey School is an Independent Special School for young people with autism aged 4-19 years whom may have additional learning difficulties and behaviours that challenge.

Due to the continued growth and success for Abbey School, we are looking for dedicated individuals to join our team.

Are you interested in supporting children with SEN, however you don't have SEN School experience?

As a Learning Mentor, we provide full training to support our pupils. If your values align with ours and you have transferable skills from other areas, please contact us today.

Would you like a job where you are off during school holidays?

Learning Mentors are not required to work when the school is closed - so you will have half-terms, Christmas, Easter, and the Summer Holidays off.

Salary is not affected - your contracted salary is split between 12, and you are paid the same salary every month - so essentially, you don't work a day in August however you are still getting paid!

There are career opportunities with us!

Many of our staff who started working as Learning Mentors have progressed into Senior Learning Mentor and Teaching roles, and so if career progression at an exceptional Special School is something that interests you, this is the School for you.

As a Learning Mentor, you will gain invaluable insights into the school’s inclusive ethos, curriculum, and dedication to bespoke support for every pupil. This experience will deepen your understanding of supporting children with special educational needs, and the importance of fostering a supportive learning environment. Having worked closely with pupils, staff, and families, you could then journey through career development opportunities to become a Senior Learning Mentor and/or Teacher. Please note that candidates applying for roles must meet the essential criteria of the role.

Bring your experience working with children and young people with complex needs, or apply transferable skills from related fields, to make a meaningful impact at our School.

We encourage you to contact recruitment@abbeyschool.com for further information.

We are looking for people with:

  • Experience of supporting children and young people with complex needs, or transferrable skills from similar fields
  • A strong level of resilience
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • A genuine commitment to improving outcomes for children and young people with special educational needs
