Job overview

Tes are currently working on behalf of a well established and inclusive Secondary School in the Falkland Islands who is seeking to appoint an experienced Teacher of Special Education Needs and Disabilities starting September 2022.

They are looking for a full time SEND teacher to work full time in the Falkland Islands initially  as an interim post, but they would happily offer a longer contract and appoint on a substantive basis for the right candidate. The successful applicant will join a well-resourced school with a supportive staff team, small class sizes and students who are keen to learn.  The SEND department is well equipped and resourced.  As part of a small SEND team, you will lead teaching and learning in a small ‘hub’ classroom for learners with complex special educational needs within the school.  You will work in partnership with a SENCo and subject teachers to ensure all learners you are responsible for have opportunities to reach their full potential across the curriculum.

This is a unique opportunity for a teaching adventure to the southern hemisphere to work short term, within an English school system. Enjoy a second summer, explore the wildlife and dramatic seascapes that the Falkland Islands has to offer!

The ideal candidate is a graduate teacher with Qualified Teacher Status (recognisable in UK) who has completed the statutory induction year as an NQT and has 2 or more years post NQT successful experience teaching SEND students across the curriculum. They are focused on teaching and learning, helping students achieve high levels of progress in a positive and effective learning environment. They have experience in teaching students with a variety of complex needs working from level P3 to equivalent NC L3 and are able to design and deliver bespoke courses focusing on life skills, functional level numeracy and literacy, as well as supporting the students to enable them to access other mainstream subjects. They would need to demonstrate recent experience of teaching students with complex SEND within the National Curriculum for England and an up to date knowledge of developments within the area, and show that they can work effectively with colleagues in the Primary section to ensure smooth transition of SEND students.

In exchange, the school will provide:

  • a stimulating and supportive working environment with a small but dedicated team
  • competitive salary
  • accommodation
  • favourable income tax rates
  • a unique and beautiful environment to live and work
  • airfares at the beginning and end of the contract
  • fixed term, short-term supply contract
