Ballakermeen High School is a large, fully inclusive and truly unique 11-18 school, set in the heart of Douglas, in the Isle of Man.  The school is very popular in the local area and the roll has grown exponentially in recent years. We are heavily oversubscribed in all year groups.

About the role and team

This is an exciting and unique opportunity to join our SEND team to teach and support students with complex and additional needs. The successful candidate will be responsible for the teaching and learning of a cohort of students with complex and additional needs, as well as working closely with our LSS team within school. This role will continue to extend to our current Special Educational Needs Department in order to support our growing cohort within school. We consider this to be an important role for the future development of our well-established SEND team.

If you are relocating to join us, you could enjoy many benefits teaching here. We recognise it can be expensive to move you and your family to the island and to keep the costs down we will cover a large portion of these expenses.

As a secondary teacher on the Isle of Man you could enjoy significant and generous financial benefits such as:

  • If you are relocating to the Isle of Man, you will receive financial help towards the costs of visiting to the Island to view housing and to visit your new school. You are eligible to receive up to £325 each for you and your partner and, if applicable, £140 each for up to 2 dependent children.
  • Financial support to get you, your family and your belongings, including one motor vehicle, to the Isle of Man. We’ll also help you to pay for storing you furniture if required. We will pay 70% of any removal or storage costs incurred. 
  • If you are in your first year as an Early Careers Teacher, you are entitled to two recruitment and retention payments of £2,000 each at the beginning of your second and third full years in teaching. 
  • Help to pay your rent/mortgage while you settle in with a housing allowance up to £500 per month over 2 years. 
  • If you are returning to the island and have participated in the Department’s Student Loan scheme for tuition fees, the loan will be repaid by the Department upon completion of your second year working as a teacher at one of the island’s Secondary schools (subject to a maximum of £7,500 for a three year degree course, or £10,000 for a four year degree course). 
  • For those relocating or returning to the island, you will receive a refund on your national insurance contributions during the first 12 months of your employment, this could be up to £4,000! 
  • A rewarding pension scheme offering a defined benefit scheme where both you and the organisation contribute towards your future including death in service cover.

Here you can enjoy a fantastic quality of life, and an excellent work-life balance. About Ballakermeen High School

 Ballakermeen High School is a co-educational, non-denominational secondary with sixth form in Douglas, the Isle of Man. The city of Douglas is the capital of this British Overseas Territory, and has a population of 28,000. There are over 1500 students on the school roll, taught between the ages of 11-18. The school teaches the national curriculum of England and Wales. 

Facilities include 13 networked computer suites equipped with Adobe and Microsoft software, and dedicated sign and technology studios. Sports facilities include a sports hall, gymnasium with extensive gymnastics equipment, large playing field for seasonal sports and athletics, multipurpose outdoor sports court area, and 20m swimming pool. There are five houses at Ballakermeen, named for places and people in the Isle of Man; Conister (a rock formation), Hillary (founder of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution), Langness (southern peninsula), Maughold (northern parish), and Patrick (southern parish). The school operates a buddy programme with assistance from Childline to help students listen to and support one another. A popular extra-curricular activity at Ballakermeen is Debate Club.
