Job overview

This role would suit someone who has recently gained the national qualification for SENDCo or someone looking for a role they can combine with training.

Due to the nature of our school this post will allow you to experience parts of the role, growing and developing your skills, whilst avoiding the whole role on offer in other settings.

All students have EHCPs at Arun Court so the large and often stressful process of application is not required. We have excellent pastoral and mental health leadership, so the role in our setting is very much centred around expertise in ASD, Developmental Delay and Language Needs.

If you are also new to leadership the part time nature of the role, and the support of a strong SLT will also help you to develop key management skills as part of a team.

What does the role entail?

Teaching small groups of students (English, maths and topic) who have significant developmental and cognitive delay (up to 4 years behind chronological expectations) in years 7 to 9 using your excellent ASD and MLD knowledge. Some of this teaching will also involve demonstrating key skills to support staff.

Supporting with timetables to ensure that all SEN entitlements are met

Leading 50% of the regular pathway meetings (our version of IEPs)

Delivering parent and staff training on specialist SEN areas, theory and strategies

Preparing reports on the cognitive progress of young people and strategies relating to their diagnosis. Reporting to the governing body on this and the effectiveness of training, parent support and strategies you will be leading.

Keeping excellent records of pupil achievement and attainment. Carrying out academic diagnostic testing to support this in line with the ethos and resources used by the school.

To work very closely with the Associate Principal who is responsible for the pastoral care and emotional well-being of students, along with their development in a range of multiple intelligences beyond the 'academic' curriculum. To work with, and be answerable to, the Principal of School ensuring that teaching and provision for those with SEND is excellent, and to help shape individual curriculums that ensure rapid progress but through enjoyment and personal development of the student.

As a school leader to be responsible for the school on mornings or afternoons where the Associate Principal and Principal are providing support and consultancy in other settings as part of our outreach programme or involved in research projects. Within this role to ensure the safety of the students and staff, and that high standards are always maintained.

We can offer you-

A supportive and innovative learning environment that is not like any school you will have ever worked in! You'll need to be enthusiastic, hard-working and creative ... but in return you will find the young people rewarding, the job fascinating the team uplifting.
