The Role: SENDCO

We are seeking an exceptional SENDCO to join our inclusive and ambitious school community. This is a key leadership role with responsibility for shaping high‑quality SEND provision across the College.

As a qualified teacher, the SENDCO will fulfil all professional teaching responsibilities while also supporting staff in delivering high‑quality, inclusive lessons. They will provide strategies and resources to help teachers meet the needs of students both in the classroom and through one‑to‑one support.

The successful candidate must be able to teach either Maths or English, delivering engaging, well‑structured lessons that support strong progress for all learners, including those with additional needs.


Key Responsibilities

The SENDCO will:

  • Lead the strategic development of SEND provision across the school, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements.

  • Oversee the identification of students with SEND and maintain accurate and up‑to‑date records.

  • Work closely with teachers to ensure high‑quality classroom practice that meets the needs of all learners.

  • Provide targeted intervention strategies and specialist guidance to staff.

  • Coordinate provision for students with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).

  • Foster positive relationships with parents, external agencies, and wider professionals.

  • Lead and support SEND staff, including teaching assistants, to deliver effective support.

  • Monitor student progress and evaluate the impact of SEND interventions.

  • Champion an inclusive school culture aligned with Cottenham’s values of Scholarship, Curiosity, and Tenacity. 


What We’re Looking For

We are looking for an experienced, motivated, and passionate professional who:

  • Is a qualified teacher with (or working towards) the National Award for SEN Coordination.

  • Has a strong understanding of SEND legislation and inclusive practice.

  • Must be able to teach Maths or English

  • Can lead, inspire and collaborate with colleagues across the school.

  • Has excellent communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with students, families and professionals.

  • Is committed to transforming outcomes for young people with additional needs.

  • Shares our commitment to inclusion, high expectations, and community‑focused education.

About Cottenham Village College

Cottenham Village College, part of the Astrea Academy Trust, a highly successful 11-16 mixed academy situated close to the beautiful city of Cambridge; here you will find hard-working, well-behaved students and dedicated staff who are committed to a fully inclusive, comprehensive education. There are around 880 students on roll and CVC shares the site with a special school, The Centre School, which is also administered by the Astrea Academy Trust.

Vision and values

A school at the heart of a small community, Cottenham Village College works hard to engage with local families. The secondary school has a strong academic focus, with a diverse and engaging curriculum on offer and a wide range of subjects both at Key Stage 4.

In order to get the best out of students, teachers set rigorous standards in terms of behaviour and attendance. Students are encouraged to developed respect for themselves, their peers and staff members.

Cottenham Village College was inspected in October 2023, achieving a 'good' rating in all areas and an overall grading of 'good'.

"The school’s well-designed curriculum supports pupils to achieve well. The results of national examinations in 2022 were impressive, placing the school in the highest 20% of schools nationally for progress and attainment in many subjects"

"Teachers have strong subject knowledge and deliver the curriculum effectively. They help pupils remember knowledge over time by regularly reviewing what has been taught. Teachers check what pupils know and understand. They provide timely support for pupils who need it."
