Barnhill Community High School is a high-performing school in West London.  Our 2019 academic outcomes place us within the top 10% of schools in the country, with a P8 score of +0.57.

The school is a diverse community of aspirational students from a variety of backgrounds.  Students of all backgrounds perform very highly at Barnhill due to excellent teaching and excellent levels of pastoral care and support.  Students with a special educational need perform very well and in line with the national average for all students.

The progress 8 score for SEND students was -0.08 in 2019, far above the national average for the cohort.  Pupil Premium students make excellent progress, with a progress 8 score of +0.48 in 2019. Our EAL students also perform superbly, with a score of +0.95.

The SEND Curriculum Area is a key part of the school’s academic and inclusion ethos.  We have invested heavily to build a team of experts and specialists to work under the SENDCo and provide the best educational support for our students.  The department’s success is founded upon our commitment to enhance the lives of all students through a high quality education.  Our ethos us well represented by the SEN department; ‘together achieving our best’.

The SENDCo will lead this strong team that includes:

Curriculum Leader for Access (bespoke KS3 special needs provision)

Access is a bespoke pathway in Key stage 3 that is taught by a small team of teachers whose strengths are in SEND teaching.  We currently have one class in year 7 and one in year 8 who are taught by a maths and English specialist, both of whom are primary trained.  Other staff with abilities in SEND teaching deliver other subjects.

EAL Co-ordinator

The EAL Co-ordinator oversees the school’s EAL provision.  The school has a high number of EAL students, but the overwhelming majority of these are functional speakers of English.  Approximately 30 students require additional support, which is provide by the EAL Co-ordinator and a teacher of EAL.

Literacy Co-ordinator

The Literacy Co-ordinator oversees the provision of the school’s reading and spelling tests and also delivers – with a small team – the Thinking Reading intervention programme. This programme is very successful in lifting the confidence and abilities of the students.  Reading is the gateway to education.

SEND provision specialist and programmes manager

The SEND provision specialist is qualified to deliver ore specialist programmes such as SALT, LUCID and Access arrangements testing.  The SEND specialist also support the SENDCo with general tasks and teaching Access classes in Key Stage 4.

HLTAs

There are two HLTSs who support with general student SEN need and also teach some small group sessions.

LSAs

The department has 4 LSAs who each have a case load of students with whom they work.

The post holder will lead the student’s educational experience to further heights and enrich the lives of our very grateful and hardworking students.

This post would suit a strategic thinker with strong personal integrity and the ability to see the best in every student.  We welcome applications from experienced SENDCos and those wishing to make a start in this profession.  We have an excellent record of accomplishment in developing and nurturing talent - with a high quality professional development programme.

Barnhill Community High School is part of the Middlesex Learning Partnership, an ambitious cross-phase Multi-Academy Trust.
