Job overview

Roedean is an extraordinary school, sitting within the South Downs National Park and overlooking the English Channel. It is not just the location, but our reputation for excellence in pastoral care, our strong academic focus, and our genuine belief in the importance of creativity and an all-round education, that makes Roedean unique.

The Senior Deputy Head is a key member of the Senior Team, and this is a great opportunity for a highly qualified and experienced individual to take the lead at a time of continued development, and with the arrival of a new Head from April 2023.

The Senior Deputy Head leads all aspects of the day-to-day operational running of the school and will assist in the leadership, development and delivery of the strategic vision across the school. The role includes high quality planning, preparations, delivery and review of all school activities to support pupils and staff, as well as responsibility for: staffing and staff welfare; inspection, compliance and policies; marketing and admissions; and school communications.

The successful candidate would be someone who has experience of senior leadership and will be confident and able to lead and offer advice in areas of school beyond the direct remit of this role, whether in pastoral, academic, finance, estates, or boarding. They will help support the delivery of the school’s over-arching priority to ensure high levels of progress are made, and to ensure the high-quality welfare and support for all pupils.

Values and vision

The School was founded in 1885, and the founding sisters wanted to provide a “thorough, physical, intellectual, and moral” education. This ethos continues today, and Roedean provides a genuinely holistic education, in which all elements complement each other; this approach places a high value on all the experiences that happen beyond the classroom in sport, art, drama, music, and dance, as well as community outreach and partnerships.

The ‘Six Pillars’ of Roedean are to encourage healthy and active living, a strong academic foundation, an appreciation of sport, culture, and the arts, to build independence of thought and character, to build on skills and confidence, and to have moral and personal values.

ISI
