Job overview

Senior Deputy Head

The Head and the Governors of The Portsmouth Grammar School are delighted to invite applications for the role of Senior Deputy Head from January 2024, following the appointment of David Payne to the Headship of Bedford Modern School.

The Portsmouth Grammar School (PGS), founded in 1732, is a leading co-educational day school for pupils aged 2½-18, located in the historic heart of the city. The school has 1,350 pupils who benefit from high academic standards, a broad co-curricular programme and exceptional pastoral provision, all underpinned by a commitment to broadening horizons and contributing to society in an ever-changing world. Through an inspiring and nurturing education that celebrates every individual and emphasises diversity, PGS strives to support each pupil to be happy and successful, and equipped not only for where they will be at 18, but where they aspire to be at 25.

This is an outstanding opportunity for an ambitious and dynamic Assistant or Deputy Head to make their mark on an already high-achieving and successful school, seeking to propel itself forward into a new era of excellence. Under Headmaster David Wickes, the Senior Deputy Head will lead the day-to-day operational running of the school, contribute to ongoing strategic planning and have a school-wide influence on all aspects of academic, pastoral and co-curricular management.

With PGS Senior Deputy Heads historically progressing to their first Headship, this is a particularly exciting opportunity for a candidate of the highest calibre to build on the strong foundations already in place and ensure pupils are offered a broad and well-rounded education that will allow them to thrive in the 21st century workplace. The successful candidate will bring a track record of pastoral or academic middle-senior leadership, professional standards of the highest quality and a genuine ideological alignment with the values and ethos of PGS.
