Job overview

Newcastle School for Boys is the only independent school in the north east of England providing continuity of education for boys only, from age three to 18.  We are passionate about boys’ learning and the development of boys and young men of excellent character.

Boys are challenged and supported by committed and dedicated teachers who care deeply about each individual boy, their learning and character development.  We offer an education tailored to boys’ learning needs and underpinned by a strong school ethos.

We are seeking to appoint a full or part-time Senior School modern foreign languages subject leader, capable of teaching French to A level.  An early start date is sought although of more importance is the appointment of the right candidate.

All boys currently study French and Spanish to the end of Year 9 with a number successfully pursuing GCSE and A level qualifications.

The successful candidate will be a passionate and dynamic teacher with a successful track record at A level and delivering excellent outcomes across the ability range as well as demonstrating the ability to:

• Lead and manage others

• Build positive and productive relationships with boys

• Enrich the modern foreign languages subject area within the School’s programmes of co-curricular activities and trips

• Contribute to boys’ character development within and beyond the modern foreign languages subject area

This is an excellent opportunity to lead and develop a subject area in an ambitious and developing school.  A contribution to the pastoral and lively co-curricular life of the School is expected.

Applicants should complete and return our application form, together with a concise supporting letter detailing how their experience and ambition would ensure the success of this role.

Applications should be e-mailed to the Headmaster’s personal assistant, Mrs Sharon Greener, at sgreener@newcastleschool.co.uk

The closing date for applications is 4pm on Monday 2nd November with initial online interviews likely to take place during the week commencing Monday 9th November.

Newcastle School for Boys is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.  In order to meet this responsibility, we follow a rigorous selection process. All successful candidates will be subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and other required pre-employment checks.

Newcastle School for Boys is the north east region’s only independent school providing education for boys only aged 3 to 18.

Following its formation in 2005 from founding schools Ascham House and Newlands School, Newcastle School for Boys is now one of the top independent schools in the North East. Located in the heart of Gosforth, Newcastle the School now sits as the only 3 to 18, boys-only school in the region.

At all points, the School aims to provide, in a supportive environment, an excellent learning experience for boys aged 3 to 18.  Specifically, aiming to:

  • challenge and support each boy to achieve the highest levels of individual academic progress;
  • develop boys and young men of excellent character.

As one of the newest schools in the independent sector, Newcastle School for Boys incorporates traditional values whilst preparing all boys for the changing expectations and pressures of modern life.

The School is unique, not only in being boy-focused and offering an education throughout a boy’s school life, but also in its size. Comparatively small in both class sizes and as an overall school, each boy who joins Newcastle School for Boys is well known to every member of staff, being treated and educated as an individual.

Many boys leaving the School go on to study at some of the most competitive universities, including Oxbridge and Russell Group institutions.  Just as importantly, each boy’s individual talents and aspirations are recognised and supported with some old boys also going straight onto successful careers or playing top-flight, professional sport.

Outside of the classroom, boys are given the opportunity to bring their learning to life on a number of exciting educational and sporting trips, such as Science trips to Florida and CERN and sports tours to India and South Africa. Our boys are also encouraged to play their part within the community, whether through voluntary and charitable work or valuable work experience in some of the region’s most highly regarded organisations.

Pastoral care at Newcastle School for Boys is second to none. Boys are offered support with matters both within and outside of school to ensure they are prepared to face the many challenges of life. From their very first years until the day they leave the School, boys participate in a character education programme, developing values of integrity, respect, courage, leadership, empathy and community, all with the focus of developing young men of excellent character.

In every aspect, an education at Newcastle School for Boys will equip boys with the tools needed to go on to lead successful and fulfilling lives beyond their school years.
