The Senior School at Harrodian prides itself on providing high standards of pastoral care to its pupils. We recognise the many challenges young teenagers are facing and have established a dynamic, experienced and caring pastoral team of staff to support them. The Senior School Pastoral Mentor & Assistant to Heads of Years is a newly-created position and will play a key part in our daily pastoral provision, as well as being a dedicated assistant to the Head of Years for the 13s, 14s and 15s. 

We are seeking an individual who is passionate about the pastoral care and learning of students to become part of the education team supporting students to reach their full potential.

The role of Pastoral Mentor at Harrodian will be suited to someone who has a passion for working with teenagers who require additional support in order to fully flourish in their education and social development. They should have a background in working to inspire and motivate young people whilst attending to the many issues they face in maintaining their wellbeing. This experience may have been gained in social work, mental health, nursing or as a teacher or teaching assistant, for example. Any candidate should have an ability to form strong relationships with pupils and exercise diplomacy and sensitivity in liaison with parents, carers and with staff. In a very busy school environment, they will be expected to show initiative in dealing calmly and proactively with challenging behaviour.

The post is term time only and part-time with an essential focus on mornings through to shortly after lunch (08:00-14:30). There will be a review of this new appointment after the first term, with the potential to move towards or to full-time if deemed necessary by the school. The full-time equivalent gross salary range is £26,000 to £29,000 and the actual salary will be calculated on a term-time only, part-time basis.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience of working with young people/adults aged 13-16 with a range of needs
  • Knowledge of the range of barriers to learning that students face
  • The ability to encourage and inspire people to achieve their potential
  • The ability to relate to young people effectively and professionally in all circumstances
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to express themselves clearly both verbally and on paper
  • Strong IT skills
  • Sensitivity to complex situations
  • Discretion and the ability to maintain absolute confidentiality
  • The ability to work as part of a team as well as individually.

About The Harrodian School

The Harrodian School is a mixed, non-denominational all-through independent day school situated in Barnes, South West London. The Harrodian School was founded by Lady Eliana and Sir Alford Houston-Boswell and opened in 1993. The school’s original intake of 65 students has expanded to over 900 students from the ages of 4-18. It offers state-of-the-art facilities, including a music centre, drama studios and expansive grounds.
