SINGING TEACHER

The Latymer School is a selective, co-educational grammar school in North London with an outstanding musical tradition and excellent facilities. We are seeking an experienced and inspirational Singing Teacher to join our large team of Visiting Music Teachers (including two current Singing Teachers) from the start of the Autumn Term 2023. Initially we anticipate that there will be one day of singing teaching for the successful applicant (mainly with younger pupils), with a second day to be added from September 2024, following the phased retirement of a colleague.

The successful applicant will be an outstanding Singing Teacher who has considerable experience of working with and inspiring 11 to 18-year-old singers, from beginner to advanced. The ability to work effectively as part of a team is vital, as well as prior experience of teaching in a secondary school environment. They will have experience of preparing students for ABRSM examinations and be able to work effectively with students preparing for GCSE and A level performances. Their knowledge of repertoire will be extensive, across a range of classical and popular styles. Experience of working with a cappella groups would be an advantage; there could be an opportunity to develop this area as an extra-curricular activity.

About 400 instrumental and singing lessons take place every week in school – including a total of four days of singing lessons. The 2022-23 hourly rate for instrumental tuition is £41.34.

ABRSM examination sessions in January, May and July take place in the Great Hall or in the Music Department, with well over 100 candidates per year. There is strong uptake of Music at GCSE and A level - typically at least 30 and 10 students per year, respectively. Our extensive extra-curricular programme includes five orchestras, four choirs and various other ensembles. Opportunities for singers include Junior and Senior Choir, Junior and Senior Chamber Choir, regular Junior, and Senior Musical Theatre productions (most recently, Matilda and Legally Blonde) and a cappella groups. There is a wide range of concerts and other music events across the year, some involving as many as 400 performers, including our biennial House Music Competition and annual Solo Instrumental and Vocal Performance Competition. Following a recent Latymer concert a parent commented, “What a concert last night! So many items took my breath away, not least the Chamber Singing - both Junior and Senior. Do you think the students have any idea how exceptional these concerts are? I suspect not, since Latymer is all, they’ve known.”

Founded in 1624, the Latymer School has provided an excellent education to the young people of Edmonton and North London for almost 400 years. We are a state-funded selective grammar school for boys and girls, it is located at the heart of the diverse and bustling Borough of Enfield, close to Edmonton Green overground station.

EQUALITIES, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION:

In 2021, following work with students arising from the Black Lives Matter and Everyone’s Invited movements, we appointed an Equalities Officer, audited our community and produced the Latymer Equalities Action Plan (LEAP). The LEAP project focusses on the characteristics protected by the Equalities Act (age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation) but may also reveal other issues outside of this remit.

The Senior Leadership Team works with a number of key, student-led groups in the school to promote equality, including the Anti-Racist Committee, the LGBTQ+ group and the Feminist Society. Amongst other activities within the Latymer community, these groups run themed assemblies, such as Black History Month and Holocaust Memorial Day.
