Since amalgamation in September 2005 Montpelier Primary School has grown into a successful, welcoming school, serving 683 pupils in the heart of the historical port of Plymouth.  With amalgamation came the building of an administration block, refurbishment and a new programme of expansion.

The school now consists of a newly expanded Foundation Unit with two outdoor play areas, two halls, a canteen, 22 classes and a music room. We are also a wireless networked school with a KS1 ICT suite and learning line along with 3 well equipped playgrounds,  a non- fiction library and a community area.

In 2009, Ofsted judged the school’s overall effectiveness as good with some elements of outstanding. Since then, we have continued to strive for improvement and have achieved consistently high standards with all key stages being well above the national average. Indeed, we have just been informed by Ofsted that following an interim assessment the school’s performance has been sustained. As a result, our next inspection will not take place any earlier than summer term 2014.

Our Foundation Unit is recognised for its outstanding practice and results are above local and national expectations.  Music is also a strength. We have a specialist music teacher who maintains our outstanding community links which has led to a national reputation for musical achievements. We are proud of our inclusive ethos and our support for SEND pupils was praised in a recent LEA review.

Our success has led us to be oversubscribed. In the last year, we increased our class sizes from 30 to 32 at key stage 2. This September, owing to the rising birth rate, we have accommodated an additional class of 30 pupils in the Foundation Unit. The person who is appointed will need to continue to maintain our high educational standards and drive the school forward to achieve an outstanding recognition from Ofsted.

Montpelier has a large staff structure comprising of 27.2 FTEs teachers including acting head teacher and acting deputy head,  40  teaching assistants, a business manager, 3 administrators, a site manager, a learning support mentor, pupil counsellor, parent support adviser, ICT technician and 28 meal time assistants.  Services for cleaning  are contracted out to private providers.

We believe that by working together we can provide a caring, creative, challenging and safe environment where everyone is valued and reach their full potential whilst becoming confident, motivated and responsible citizens. Much of our success is built on our ability to communicate,   establish relationships and build strong teams across the school.  We have a team approach to managing all areas, including our curriculum and year groups.  A variety of community links exists including our hard working PTFA who strive to raise additional funds for the benefit of our children.

We wish to maintain our important place in the city and need to be lead by someone who, whilst working together with children, staff, parents, governors and the wider community can continue our journey to be an outstanding primary school.
