Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a Sixth Form Learning Mentor. This is an exciting opportunity to join our support team, working closely with the Sixth Form team and our students. We are looking for a member of staff with excellent communication skills and the expertise to build effective relationships with students in order to reduce barriers to learning and support them in reaching their potential. Experience in a school setting would be an advantage, but above all, we are looking for the right person to work with our young people.

The role is a learning support role working mostly with Sixth Form students on a one-to-one or small-group basis. You will work with students to create a personalised mentoring programme to support their academic progress. In this role, you will provide advice and guidance on methods of effective study and revision, helping students to improve their success in the Sixth Form. This could include helping students to find materials and manage their workload effectively and suggesting different approaches to tasks. You will be expected to communicate with parents and teaching staff to personalise the approach for individual students and their needs. Good record-keeping will be essential to monitor the progress of the students and the effectiveness of the interventions. This role is overseen by the Sixth Form team and based upstairs in the Library Resource Centre (LRC), which enables close working relationships with the LRC Manager and our Careers Advisor.

In this part-time, term-time role, you will work 13 hours per week. The daily working hours will be agreed to meet the needs of the student cohort. The formal school day starts at 8.50am and finishes at 3.15pm. There may be an opportunity for additional working hours (up to 30 hours per week) for a suitable candidate linked to the Learning Support department, providing in-class support for students. Please let us know if you are interested in developing a dual role, although this is not essential.

King Edward VI School is a popular 11–18 comprehensive school rated Good by OfSTED in 2022 with recognition of outstanding practice and a highly positive ethos. The school is well-regarded within the community and has a reputation for high-quality teaching. Lichfield is a small, vibrant cathedral city which is easily accessible from the surrounding areas.

King Edward VI School is an 11-18 school serving the community of Lichfield and surrounding rural areas. We want everyone in school to develop to their full potential; it is our job to ensure that students leave us as confident, life-long learners who have a strong sense of responsibility for themselves and for others. We are a learning community with a positive, supportive and friendly environment where we take the time to get to know our students so we can support their learning and their personal development. We seek to develop a strong partnership between students, parents and the school to enable this to take place.

Our overriding aim is to provide the highest quality education for all students. We believe that every individual has potential: our commitment is to help each young person to make the most of their abilities. The majority of our students seek to continue their education with us in our Sixth Form until they are 18 and our results are consistently amongst the best in Staffordshire. Our aim is to ensure that students leave us with the knowledge, skills, confidence and love of learning that is needed to successfully complete their education and throughout their life.

‘It was noted that there is a school culture which is underpinned by high expectations and a climate of mutual respect. As a result, pupils are keen to learn and work hard’. Ofsted October 2017

Learning reaches far beyond the classroom; we seek to provide an all-round education. Extra-curricular activities are offered in a wide range of areas and staff are encouraged to share their own areas of interest with the students. There is also an extensive range of educational visits and events both locally and further afield. Our students are able to explore their potential and develop new skills; we encourage all students and staff to get involved with the wider life of the school and its community.

The school’s strongest assets are its staff and students. If you are considering joining us then please consider coming for an informal visit and see for yourself.

We are committed to professional development and encourage a collaborative approach to school improvement.
